I work at a public school. Our school psychologist is split between two schools. The SROs are so restricted to what they can do, they are literally useless in most situations where school could use an extra adult. We have no behavior interventionist, aides, or assistant principal. Please save the money and do not fund SROs as they cannot fulfill school needs. They, instead, are triggers of trauma and expose the children to insecurity and coercion by force.
I understand that the money for SROs in schools has already been granted but I urge you to reconsider using PHX PD when they have already proven they cannot serve our community with accountability of their actions and without violence. Placing police in schools often does the opposite of what’s intended and creates unsafe spaces for children and detracts from education. If this passes I beg whoever is in charge to put careful thought into the officers that are placed.
