31 Request Authorization to Enter Into Contracts with The Society of St. Vincent de Paul and Justa Center for COVID-19 Heat Relief Services (Ordinance S-46816)
Heat Relief is vital. However, these contracts appear to spend large amount of money for very little in return. Instead of setting up cooling stations in areas of homeless encampments (where the need is greatest), it appears to offer pop up shading outside of the two charities buildings with misters and swamp coolers. Why not contract for truly portable cooling stations where homeless people congregate (i.e. near their tents)? The contract amounts seem high for the services proposed. Thanks.
I support the intent of this measure but question involvement with St. Vincent de Paul as their organization is anti-LGBTQ. Justa Center, however, is a more inclusive organization. Consider giving them more funding and the upper-hand here to impact the community. Just last year, St. Vincent de Paul's The Gardens in Ohio kicked out a lesbian couple from a transitional home because of their sexual orientation.
Justa Center would like to thank Mayor Gallego, Councilwoman Pastor, and the leadership of the City Human Services Department for making Heat Relief for the homeless and poor a priority in our community. Our seniors at Justa Center thank you and tell us they would not know what to do without the day-shelter spaces. On their behalf, we thank the City of Phoenix.
