77 Public Hearing - Amend City Code and Ordinance Adoption Off-Premise Signs Along the Western Portion of the State Route Loop 202 Freeway - Z-TA-6-19 (Ordinance G-6747)
I request denial of Z-TA-6-19 & respectfully request creating a Steering Committee to initiate a Scenic Corridor and Cultural, Historic Assets Study along 22 miles of the 202L to determine area of Cultural, Historic significance & develop a Scenic Corridor Policy in partnership with state agencies, stakeholders & the community. This issue is of great public concern in regards to outdoor uses with significant visual impacts, such as outdoor storage and off-premise advertising structures
Mayor, Vice Mayor and Council: Please oppose this text amendment. This TA has been rushed through without seeking stakeholder input and without a careful review of what the proposed text amendment would do to the scenic corridors of the loop. Additionally, is this the way we want to honor the legacy of Rep. Ed Pastor? We urge you to step back and review the area with a corridor study of the area, and include residents, property owners and sign companies. Clear views, not clutter.
The Congressman Ed Pastor Freeway has not even been opened a YEAR. When this was brought up at the Laveen Village Planning Committee meeting last year, concerns were raised about out reach being done to the neighbors closest to where the signs could go. There needed to be community outreach done by the city beyond the VPC meetings. A scenic corridor study needs to be done before this city does this. Give our villages a chance to develop more before you pull this. We deserve better!
The highway is still brand new. Having billboards at this time will discourage favorable upcoming tenants in the area and we need more development. This is the priority. Billboards aren't always effective. they are stationary, causes lighting, safety issues, and downgrade of the area. They also will take away from the Natural view of the highway and the area. It may be a lucrative business, but the interest and the wishes of the community should come first and not the financial motivation.
Reid Butler here, the Lines Family development partner. The Lines Family (Rusty Lines, Wes Lines) are very long-time landowners in the Laveen area. The Lines Family has been working with the Laveen Community and the City for many decades to plan for this Freeway. The Lines Family supports this Text Amendment to allow for the potential of Freeway signage as part of comprehensive/integrated master planning to bring new development and services adjacent to this modern, state-of-the-art, Freeway.
I oppose. We do not need to interrupt the AZ desert wIth more garbage ads along the freeway or add more light pollution to the city or reduce highway safety by distracting drivers. DO NOT ALLOW BILLBOARDS ON SOUTH MOUNTAIN 202 LOOP!
I am opposed to this amendment. The area offers such breathtaking natural views and the placement of billboards along the 202 is wrong for Laveen. Please stand with the community and help us in preserving the area.
I oppose this text amendment. The views from the new 202 are spectacular and need to be preserved. Billboards are a blight. Businesses have better and much less intrusive signage options for effective advertising (e.g. monument signs, signs on building walls facing the freeway). Examples include the Sprouts complex at 51st Ave. & Baseline (Laveen), Tempe Marketplace and Desert Ridge. We don't need to be like everywhere else in the Valley or like SoCal. Keep Laveen beautiful!
