1 Comprehensive Roadway Safety Overview

Additional resources to roadway safety can be helpful, but they must not prioritize drivers above all other road users. Phoenix lanes are overly wide and encourage folks to speed in the name of "safety" of drivers, but speeding is a significant factor in many of the injuries listed in the staff report. The safest option for a driver is a flat road with no interruptions. But that dooms pedestrians and other users who have to travel further to cross or risk their own life just to cross a street.

As the Chair of the CTC, I ask that the Phoenix City Council support the Comprehensive Roadway Safety recommendation from city staff. This item, requesting up to $3m in T2050 revenues to develop and implement the comprehensive roadway safety plan and projects, was supported unanimously by the entire Commission in January. Phoenix ranked third in fatalities between 2017 and 2019 and needs to be at the forefront of our priorities to protect Phoenicians.

Please support the Comprehensive Road Safety proposal in order to expand the Traffic Unit squads to address the growing serious traffic incidents. Allowing the squads to focus on the serious crime in our city.

Totally needed in district 5. 19th Ave /Glendale and 19th Ave/Northern there have been many fatalities due to jay walkers. We so need police patrolling these areas. Daily I have witnessed 20 jaywalkers within a 15 min time frame. Need more patrolling to keep everyone safe.
