I strongly urge you to vote to allow rentals of City of Phoenix pools to area high schools for use in the fall high school swim season. A no vote adversely affects hundreds if not thousands of area students. Please consider being a continued good partner to local schools and allow rentals of the pools you already plan to open to the public this summer.
I am writing today to request your YES vote to be able to open the City of Phoenix public pools to the area High Schools to rent for this upcoming Swim Team season. Our student athletes rely on these pools to be able to practice and compete in a sport that they love. It would be devastating if they didn't have the City pools to use this fall. Please consider a YES vote today to allow our High Schools to rent Phoenix public pools like they always have in the past.
There is no reason why the city should not be renting pools in the fall to the local high schools. There is no evidence that Covid is spread through chlorine. This is backed by the CDC. In fact, schools and businesses are cleaning with chlorine. It would be detrimental to high school swimming in Arizona to not rent the pools. There are just not enough private pools to support the teams to hole practices and host meets. You have the pools and the space and we are willing to pay.
We strongly support the reopening of the city services in the Parks and Recreation and Human Services Departments. The pools are a necessary resource for the community, and they provide valuable health and safety benefits. The CDC states that "Currently, there is no evidence that COVID-19 can spread to people through recreational water" (https://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/swimming/safe-swimming-week/feature.html).
Students support the pools, please let them race and dive into them. This support comes in the form your Life Guards, Swim Instructors, and future pool managers. Students have faced enough hardship over the past year to be locked out of this again as well. Please help us all understand how this even became an option. Years and years of a strong city and school relationship being played with at the expense of high school students does not seem like a good fit.
The last year has been very difficult for many people. There have been significant negative mental & physical effects on kids. With the pandemic the emotional toll has been extreme. Swim team was truly a life-saver for my daughter. After a long Spring semester at home & the isolation of Summer with human contact only online or via phone for months, getting to attend an outside activity with her peers was critical. More pool space will provide more social distancing and reduce risk even further.
We strongly encourage the resumption of the City's partnership with local high schools in the re-opening of the pools for swim season and competition. Our young people have sacrificed and suffered enough from the adverse effects of the pandemic. A return to routine and healthy physical activity will benefit them greatly - in body and mind - and the City of Phoenix will win, too, by generating income and getting people back to work at the parks and the pools. Open the parks and pools!
As a parent of two high school swimmers, I urge the City Council to reconsider their position on renting pools to public high schools. Our teens need this opportunity to exercise and safely interact outside with their peers. Last year our coaches went to great lengths to ensure proper distancing and masks. I know the coaches will do the same again this year. Your vote of support could positively effect over 1,000 athletes across the City of Phoenix. Show your constituents that you care!
Please consider opening the pools to high school athletes this Fall. My son participated in swim training post COVID and did so in a safe manner. And, continues to do so.
There is no direct evidence to show swim participation activity increases COVID cases.
Rather what can happen is an eventual damage to our beloved city of Phoenix, the employees, students, and community.
Rise up and support your current and future community!
Please consider opening the city pools to the local high school swim teams. This is the most safe and economical way for our student athletes to complete in an after school sport. Last swim season was successfully completed without any issues of community spread of COVID. Closing the pools increases costs and decreases participation in high school swim teams. And the lost jobs at the pools is an economic detriment to the city of PHX pool employees.
