As a resident I am in total support of having a designated Juneteenth holiday. The grandmother of Juneteenth, Opal Lee, having fought for this day nationally to become a designated holiday - I believe Phoenix must remain relevant and in step with this recognition. Phoenix must be on the right side of history. After the debacle of the MLK Day many years ago, Phoenix needs to follow through in making Juneteenth a city holiday.
Dear Mayor and City Council, I support the Resolution to Declare June 19th as a designated City recognized holiday known as Juneteenth Day in Phoenix, Arizona as a paid holiday. This offers the opportunity for Phoenix residents to recognize and learn about important moments in black history that should be celebrated by all.
Mayor & CIty Council: As a 20 year resident of the City, I urge you to approve the designation of Juneteenth each year as a City holiday. Send a clear message to the people of this city, state and nation that African Americans deserve historical, present and future recognition. Our contributions, resilience and fortitude --for the generations now and next-- can teach others of the tremendous trials we have and continue to overcome, while still exhibiting love for our community. Dear Mayor and City Council, I support the Resolution to Declare June 19th of Each Year as a Designated City Holiday Known as Juneteenth Day. Juneteenth marks a date of major significance in American history. I hope Phoenix will join other cities like Kansas City, Missouri
Chattanooga, Tennesee, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Springfield, Illinois, Wilmington, Delaware, Florence, South Carolina, Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Chicago and New York City in observing the day of celebration and reflection.
Dear Mayor and City Council, I support the Resolution to Declare June 19th of each year as a designated City Holiday known as Juneteenth Day in Phoenix, Arizona. Texas first recognized Juneteenth as a paid holiday in 1980. As a designated holiday, Juneteenth will serve as a means for Phoenix residents to recognize and learn about an important moment in history that should be celebrated by all. Thank you.
Mayor & City Council members: As a resident of Phoenix since 1982, I have been a regular participant of the Juneteenth celebration since 1993. The Juneteenth celebration is as important as the City’s Cesar Chavez Holiday or any other cultural celebration that is recognized. The symbolism of the delayed recognition of freedom for a people enslaved for over 400 years is cause to expedite this very important date & give it the long overdue recognition it deserves. Hello, my name is Jesse Ary. I thank you honorable Mayor & Council for allowing me to offer comment on It#47. I have been a citizen of Phoenix since 1969 - one year after Mrs. Vernell Coleman organized and held the 1st Juneteenth celebration at Dunbar Elem School in 1968 to mirror the celebrations she had experienced in TX growing up. Juneteenth has now been declared a federal holiday in a number of cities and it is time for Phoenix to step up to the plate and do likewise. I support this item.
