Anyone close to the people or process that has been this past year is aware that GCU has spent money on third party services, Legal fees, and has made offers of support that are completely useless to the people of periwinkle. No attempt was made to pay for the relocation of residents, or even compensate those GCU knew would not be able to move their homes. They complain of the money they've spent, when it has all gone to ensuring the residents get nothing.
The lives of 300 people should be prioritized over Dealers Auto Auction of the Southwest's expansion of a parking lot and GCU's profiteering at the expense of existing communities. Moreover this is a question of democracy, will the council serve the interests of the working majority of Phoenicians or those of wealthy developers? Support the moratorium.
The residents of Periwinkle have now had more than a year and now are clearly choosing not to move at this point. They have had access to resources (including thousands of dollars) to locate new housing and have not done so. How much more time is reasonable? Passing this moratorium will not legally stop the actual park closures and exposes the city to the costs of a court challenge.
Displacement is a violent process that forces people out of their homes, dispossesses them of their belongings, removes them from their community, and disrupts their way of life. Displacement is especially life-threatening for people struggling to meet their basic needs because it redirects their time and energy towards searching for a new home, migrating, and resettling rather than securing their survival. The least you could do is give the residents more time to find a place to live.
Considering the threats of imminent displacement and homelessness, you must declare a moratorium on development of Periwinkle, Las Casitas, and Weldon Court mobile home parks. The council's decision to vote against families and protect developers in the last meeting was deplorable. Now you have the opportunity to do right by your constituents. Give these residents more time in their homes, don't destroy their communities.
The least the city can do is to pass a moratorium on development. Give residents more time to stay in their homes. Do not let an institution as large as GCU continue to displace people from their homes! You have the power as city council members to work with tenants experiencing the effects of the 'housing crisis'. How much value would the destruction and new build for GCU add to the community to warrant the large scale eviction? They are giving you the solution, do your part and implement it.
Pass the moratorium and give these tenants more time to look for housing. Rents in this city are too high. It's a struggle to find affordable housing - it's impossible with eviction looming over your head. Pass this moratorium or you will be responsible for hundreds of people becoming homeless right as we enter the most dangerous part of the year.
City council is supposed to be leaders for the people, because of the people. You have peoples lives in your hands. Support the 300 residents you claim to represent, from facing the loss of basic right to a home. The needs of private institutions/industries are not a reflection of the needs of the people. Are you a council for private, wealthy, and elitist institutions, or are you a council for and by the people? Arizona residents from all over the state are closely watching your decisions!!
