I support the Enhanced Light Rail Security program but would also like to see a robust plan going forward. We cannot have this as a temporary band-aid only to have the same old problems resurface. Neighborhoods and ridership need to feel safe in order for light rail to be a viable option of transport. Please looks at the long term with a good solution for the future.
Phoenix will never reach its transit goals until people feel safe. Right now, that is not the case. Instead of adding officers for a 3-week trial, it's time to permanently assign them to light rail. The transit cops in our area have done tremendous things by removing problematic bus shelters, engaging with business owners to curb crime, and generally being a vigilant presence. That is what is needed to clean up Valley Metro's trains. But don't rob Peter to pay Paul. Then neither will be safe.
I do support the Enhanced Light Rail Security program for the next 3 weeks, however Valley Metro's fare enforcement performance is unacceptable. We need to look at other options for security services, if Valley Metro cannot OR will not enforce fares. The rest of the City of Phx cannot and should not have to carry the burden of Valley Metro's lack of enforcement (even more) if this program extends past the 3 weeks. Valley Metro needs to be held accountable.
I support the Light Rail Security plan for the next three weeks. However, Valley Metro needs to be held accountable. The problems and crime on the train are so bad that we need to reassign our limited police resources to assist a security program that despite a very large budget, has been unable to keep the light rail safe for everyday riders. I am worried that after three weeks, the criminals will resume business as usual. The proposal is simply a stopgap measure and we need a real solution.
I support the Light Rail Safety Plan. In the past ten years neighborhood leaders have met with Valley Metro many times to address the non-enforcement of the code of conduct and constant criminal activity. Valley Metro's $50,000,000 contract should be taken away and a Transit Precinct should be created with that $50 mil. Transit police are responsible for over 4000 bus stops and are very successful. With this plan which I approve Transit Police will be operating with a very thin staff.
