The bridge is a much needed protected path for biking/walking north/south connecting downtown to South Mountain; however, without continuous paths to and from the bridge it will leave bikers/pedestrians at a dead end. Paths north and south of the bridge need to be designed and constructed to facilitate safe travels north/south. Without the paths, I can see the bridge failing to create and active biking/walking path making it another under used, unsafe corridor in Phx metro.
I strongly support this vital bridge connection over Rio Salado, but want to also emphasize the importance of the ped/bike connections it will make and the need to provide safe and continuous bike connections in and through downtown on 3rd Street.
Cars used to be freedom, but are now a parental prison and an obstacle to childhood independence and self-reliance.
Please ensure a continuous 3rd St bike connection with a protected bike lane on the new Rio Salado bridge.
With a major investment like this long term planning is critical, without a protected bike lane for this bridge to connect to we are forcing commuters to endanger themselves on our arterial roads.
With this $25 million investment, it's crucial to add protected bike lanes on 3rd Street through downtown. Otherwise, cyclists will be dropped downtown with no way to safely travel north. With downtown's recent residential development, the rise of micromobility and e-bikes, and the increasing rate of traffic deaths for pedestrians and cyclists, it's time to finally build a safe north-south bike route.
