I am commenting in support of removing the reverse lanes on 7th Ave and 7th St. As a resident of the Coronado Neighborhood myself and many other neighbors have witnessed several crashes related to this ridiculous configuration. These lanes also negatively impact businesses along the corridor and harm every neighborhood they pass through. We do not need surface level highways running through our neighborhoods! Please vote in support of removing the reverse lanes.
Instead of prioritizing traffic throughput, we should limit traffic to only two lanes in each direction. The reversible lane can be converted to a median with native trees and separated crosswalks to improve the walkability and connectivity of the area. Having the median should also help to lower speeds and reduce accidents. We should put effort to improving frequency of light rail to entice commuters to switch their mode of transit and offset the removal of the reversible lane.
The Carnation Association of Neighbors supports this position. Our neighborhood is between Central and 7th Ave in the Melrose District. The reverse lanes harm neighborhood connectivity and mobility, and cause many of our residents to drive many additional miles to get to where we need to go because we cannot cross the street during the reverse lane hours. These reverse lanes divide our communities. Please vote in favor of the petition to end the reverse lanes.
