I support the rehire of Ed Zuercher. He is honest, loyal and a good steward of Phoenix funding and resources. He lives where he works and is sincerely involved with all of us that he serves. We will be lucky to have him back.
Rehiring Ed Zuercher is blatantly against written policy on hiring. Retirees cannot be brought back to the exact same job. Bringing back someone whose decisions have resulted in lawsuits and scandals is reprehensible and a dereliction of your fiduciary responsibilities.
Council, we see you trying to sneak Ed Zuercher back into power without public input. Rehiring Zuercher violates your own policy that bans rehiring retirees. He led the deadliest PD in the US and fled the city to avoid DOJ scrutiny. Under Zuercher, cops colluded with MCAO to terrorize our communities and now you're being sued for millions because of his actions. Bringing him back tells the people of Phoenix that our lives don’t matter. This is exactly why there's a policy against this.
I oppose the hiring of Ed Zuercher as City Manager. His involvement with framing citizens peacefully protesting in 2020 as gang members is enough to disqualify him. He was forced to resign in disgrace, and does not deserve the responsibility of this position. Then there is his flagrant misuse of taxpayer funds to hire consultants whose "best" work resulted in nothing. Zuercher has betrayed the public trust. If the Phoenix city council has a shred of integrity, they will not hire Ed Zuercher.
I'm commenting to oppose the hiring Ed Zuercher as City Manager. His mere involvement with the framing of citizens peacefully protesting in 2020 as gang members, which directly led to him resigning in disgrace, should disqualify him. Not to mention his flagrant misuse of taxpayer funds to hire consultants who's best work resulted in nothing at all, this leaves no room for any trust in him. If there truly is a place for honesty on the Phoenix City Council, then there is NO place for Ed Zuercher.

This item is horrifying, but it truly exemplifies this current mayor's and this council's lack of humanity, morals and ethics. If this is approved, it further shows the continuing disregard for Black and Brown human life within this jurisdiction.
As a citizen who works and lives in Phoenix, who experienced the political violence of Phoenix City Council, MCAO, and PPD trying to weaponize language to call protesters “gang” members in 2020, I oppose the rehiring of Ed Z as city manager. This hiring is violent towards the people who had their lives turned upside down and had community fight to get all charges dropped. It is also against the councils own rules for hiring of staff. Do laws and rules actually matter? For council: selectively.
Ed Zuercher protected the deadliest police force in the nation. He defended cops who colluded with MCAO prosecutors to falsely charge protesters as gang members. And now you want to reward him with another chance to run this city? What message does that send to the Black, brown, and Indigenous people who have been targeted and caged? It tells us our lives do not matter. It tells us white supremacy runs this Council.
No more cover up cops!!!! Ed Zuercher protected the deadliest police force in the nation. He defended cops who colluded with MCAO prosecutors to falsely charge protesters as gang members. And now you want to reward him with another chance to run this city? How dare you! What message does that send to the Black, brown, and Indigenous people who have been targeted and caged? KKKate you and Barton are seriously trying to slide this onto the formal agenda 2 days before the meeting? Babe you have got to read a book or even an article about anti Black racism. Whew. You just keep recycling the same garbage and creating the same scandal. We OPPOSE Ed Z coming back after he left in disgrace for colluding in your cop cover up from 2020. This is beyond the pale. PPD is already on a killing spree under the new chief. Maybe some day you will listen to the people and get a clue
Do not rehire Ed Zuercherb as city manager. He is a threat to Black and brown communities in a time when we need the most support from our community leaders. Shame on Mayor Kate Gallego for attempting to allow this potentially illegal move. As always, free Palestine, free Congo, free Sudan.
Phoenix would be lucky to have the skillful leadership of Ed Zuercher as City Manager again. After the FAA flightpath changes in 2014, he personally met with affected residents in my area, ordered an outside investigation, published the resulting report online and made necessary changes in leadership at Sky Harbor Airport - now one of our nation's top airports. His integrity and commitment to transparency are above reproach. I SUPPORT his re-hiring and I hope the Council will as well. Thank you.
How is this even legal? Your policy forbids rehiring a retiree to do the same job. But instead of following your own rules, you cut the public out of the process & tried to sneak Ed back in. If you believed this was legitimate, you wouldn’t have hidden it. You’re breaking your own rules & lying to the public. That is corruption. That is a cover-up. If you can’t even follow your own policies, what legitimacy do you have to govern anyone? You are breaking your own laws to protect a corrupt insider

I understand that the Phoenix City Council wants to bring back a former city manager back. However, this seems like a desperate move to move this without any public input, or any process where the community is involved in the vetting process. If this can be continued, it can be better, with a search and so on. I understand that it may cost more to get a hiring agency to look for someone, but the transparent way is better.
