I support this policy and vehemently encourage and demand the City do more to protect everyone that lives here and our most at risk communities from ICE. ICE is a community hazard and only serves to endanger us all. This is a good start but please also expand protections, we all deserve better protections from ICE and anyone working with ICE.
I fully support this policy, I have seen nothing good come out of ICE in my community or online. I know this is just the start but that's what is good, this is the start of fighting back against the awful things that they are doing here in our community.
I support this initiative but also want to stress that it is only the beginning of policy that helps the residents of Phoenix districts in protecting themselves from ICE's unconstitutional abuse of authority without identification but with our tax dollars. PPD still collaborates with ICE (4th Ave Jail), where they have ICE screen detainees (12 News report) in the spirit of Mesa's 287(g) agreement and despite $2B in funding. We need the city to allocate $2M for a deportation defense fund.
I fully support this policy and, honestly, I wish this city would go further to protect its people from abuse by ICE. The organization both in, procedure and practice, has shown itself to be nothing more than a pack of federally deputized brown shirts. This is a good first step but we need more, public funds for defense against unlawful deportation, restriction of presence around transit hubs or local businesses, etc. There’s a lot more that needs to be done before we’re truly safe again.
I support this initiative. ICE has done nothing good for my community. They only lead to fear and unease amongst my friends and family. It is slightly comforting to see our city take steps to hold a terrorizing organization such as ICE accountable.
ICE has violated hundreds of court orders, and perhaps more importantly, it has violated the human rights - note that it is HUMAN rights, not CITIZEN rights - of tens of thousands of men, women, and children. I support the transparency initiative because if the federal government will not follow its own laws then it is up to the cities and the states to ensure we protect every human being.
ICE violates people's constitutional rights not just routinely but as standard operating procedure. ICE agents terrorize and intimidate not just "illegal aliens" but citizens and residents as well. Their officers are unknown and unaccountable to the communities they threaten, and so far even to congressional oversight. No community has been made safer by ICE. It is imperative that this initiative pass and I hope this will be one of many steps you take to ensure our city is safe from ICE.
I support the Community Transparency Initiative - Citywide. Thank you Phoenix City Council for listening to the concerns of your residents. ICE is a known violator of Constitutional and Human Rights and needs to be reigned in and held accountable for their crimes. This transparency initiative is a good first step towards building trust and a safer community for all.
I support this transparency initiative and would like to thank the City Council for hearing the commuity's concerns. We've seen across the country that ICE has been violating people's rights and using public property to do it. I'm glad to see that the city is taking steps to avoid becoming complicit in these constitutional violations. There's more that can be done to protect community members like a public deportation defense fund. But this is a good step in the right direction.
In January, a federal judge in Minnesota found that ICE had violated over 96 court orders across 77 cases in January alone. This is more violations in one month than some federal agencies have done in their entire operating lifespan. They're negligent, belligerent, opportunistic, racist, and incompetent, and given free reign to serve more as a form of state-backed political violence and terrorism than an actual law enforcement organization. There needs to be actual consequences and jurisdiction.
I strongly support the Community Transparency Initiative. Banning ICE from using city property without explicit permission is a meaningful step toward protecting Phoenix residence. I urge the Council to go further, including establishing a public deportation defense fund to ensure due process for all community members, regardless of immigration status.
I support the Community Transparency Initiative being put forth. DHS/ICE has demonstrated that they will violate citizen's constitutional rights (4th, 10th, 14th) and have been found by congressional hearings to have been instructed to violate those rights. I appreciate PHX city council members trying to get in front of these violations and protect its citizens. Thank you for trying to be on the right side of history.
Understand that federal agents are federal, but under the 10th Amendment of the constitution, local cities can have local control. If they have a warrant, it is understandable. However, the city does have a fundamental right to make sure that residents are safe and thus I am in support of this item. Right now in this climate, we also need to make sure and call out on our Federal government that they have a fundamental right to do things constitutionally.
Under the Constitution, immigration enforcement is federal. Cities cannot legalize undocumented immigrants, block federal agents, or override federal priorities. Phoenix may control its property, but this ordinance clearly affects federal enforcement. A decision with this impact should go directly to the voters so the will of the people—not only the Council—is respected.
