I OPPOSE THE RENAMING OF SQUAW PEAK DRIVE.
A vote on street renaming should consider the percentage of residents of Squaw Peak Drive and others who have responded in opposition to renaming to the percentage of responders from the total Phoenix native American community who support the renaming.

Fully support this if the street has to be renamed. I would suggest Naming after Charles Keating IV, a Phoenix native and was the first Navy SEAL from Phoenix killed while fighting ISIL in Iraq, in 2016. The President of the United States awarded the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Charles Keating, IV for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action on 4 March 2016, while serving as Senior Enlisted Advisor.

I strongly support the name change to Piestewa Drive to honor Lori Piestewa, an AZ native and National War Heroine.

The major concern I’m reading from those opposed to this change is financial, while I’m trying to raise my Indigenous daughter to feel safe & confident in this city. Your street name is a reminder she isn’t safe. And for what?! $12 for a new license, plus a few hours of inconvenience to update your records? “Squ*w” is a racial/sexist slur towards Indigenous womxn, who face rates of sexual violence 3X+ that of any other race - THAT’S the side you’re on when you fight to keep the name. Do better.

I support the proposed name change and feel it is shockingly overdue. I support either options presented and look forward to this street being renamed.

It is time to change the name! The current peak name has already been changed and now it is time for the street. The current name is degrading to Native women and people. The entire country is changing and it is time for this steet name too. Tribes, Native people and allies are in support of this change--even if they dont comment or speak during this mtg. Thank you to those who have supported the name change by speaking and leaving comments.

I strongly support this name change. Both alternatives are positive options.

I support this long overdue change of name! The present name is derogatory and offensive. I support either of the suggested alternatives.

I am in favor of this overdue change to S**** Peak Drive. The suggestions of Lori Piestewa Drive or Piestewa Peak Drive are both honoring the landscape and an important person in our community.

The City Council has significantly underestimated costs associated for owners on renamed streets. Personally can think of over 20 items that need to be updated: DMV, Utilities, Titles, Legal documents, etc... All takes extensive time & money to change. Seniors, disabled & others will need help with process not just a list of where to go online (most seniors are not computer savvy or own a computer). Will owners receive mail labeled with old street name after name change & for how long?

One quick comment: NO ONE who is not Native American should be commenting on whether or not the street name in question is offensive or not. NO ONE.

Anyone who is doing that is the same as telling an African American person their opinion as to whether the n-word is offensive or not. It is not for you to decide, and it's not for me to decide, whether or not *another* community should be offended by a given word. Neither you nor I know the full history, context, etc. Be respectful of others!

If a street name has to be conesored in the agenda, it probably shpuldn't be a street name, first of all. I see a lot of calls for the people who live on this street to be consulted and I agree that they should be given whatever assistance they need when it is changed. However, no indigenous women were consulted in the naming of a street as an insult, a slur towards them. It needs to be changed immediately.

No state or institution should bear racist, degrading terms. Lead with love. Change the name

We're smartly changed the name of the Peak and the Parkway, I see no reason to keep this vulgarity on any city signage.

Council’s intentions are obvious: Atch C list of eligible names submitted by Community lists Piestewa Peak Dr FIRST, though all others on list are in alpha order, which would place it LAST on list AND Piestewa Peak Dr was NOT submitted by community. It was submitted by the Mayor. Other names proposed were left off list: Pg 132 Mountain Peak Dr & Desert Peak Dr. My comments submitted 7/19 also not included in report. It included important issues & add’l proposed street names including Park Pl.
