Living here for 20 years, I have seen the effect of the Violence Impact Project on prostitution. I believe this multi-faceted pilot program will not only benefit our neighborhood but be a model for other areas later on. It gives police more tools and follows through with issues of homelessness, drugs, etc. In answer to Vice-Mayor Garcia's homeless impact objection, please check Cactus Precinct data to see how many people accept help vs. how many drugs, guns, and felons are taken off the street.
I have lived near Glendale/ 27th Ave for 3 yrs. There are consistently homeless ppl sleeping in our parks, some leaving drug paraphernalia & weapons under the same trees where we break piñatas. There are drug busts in our bus stops, violence against shop owners & prostitutes walking around 27th Ave/ Luke where we visit the bakery & Harvest Compassion Center. I support a plan that engages community members & utilizes their feedback to direct further action, not one that just relies on policing.
I have been store manager at the Savers Thrift store on 27th Ave/Bethany for two years. In this time, the crime rate has exploded with increased drug activity, prostitution, violent crime, and homelessness. Support is critical for this crime prevention plan for the safety of local residents, students/staff at Alhambra Traditional School, and Savers shoppers, donors, and team members. Support from the City with more police presence and expansion or the Gated Alley Pilot program would help greatly
As a professional working on several design projects in the area, I support this plan. Crime, prostitution and safety need to be addressed with a comprehensive plan. The plan is a step in the right direction to enhance the quality of life of residents and businesses.
Prostitution is heavy in this corridor. I see these girls out in basically nothing all hours of the day and night looking for John's. It's an uncomfortable situation while walking my child to and from school. And calls to non emergency don't help at all. It should be a sex offense to be wearing what they do so close to a school!
I grew up in this neighborhood and yes crime was around but not to the point it is now. Crime is visible day and night. Something need to be done and as a community we need to work together.
I own a commercial property/business on 27th Ave and Glendale. The increase in all types of crime over the years is obscene. Literally every day one of my customers will comment on what they see, and wonder why I stay in this neighborhood. I fully support this plan, and hope to God it helps. The business owners and residents of the 27th Ave corridor deserve better. But this must be a long term solution and not a flash-in-the-pan attempt at crime suppression like we have seen in the past.
Soy miembro de San Francisco Xavier y vivo en El área de la 27 avenida por 26 años jamás había visto tanta violencia, robos asaltos y prostitución, Quiero un cambio para mi vecindario, muchas gracias .
We really need safe parks for our kids to go. Kids Street Park is 2 blocks from our house & our 13 year old was attacked there. When we filed the order of protection and spoke with the police they said they can’t keep people from going to the park because it is public. The park employees in the rec center advise parents to not let their kids come alone because it is not safe. Most kids have no outlet but the park. Light are needed but how do we make parks safe? Assaults occur in broad daylight.
As a 40+ year resident of the 27th Avenue corridor I am vitally concerned about the ongoing erosion of the lifestyle and safety of the residents and a nearly inhospitable business climate in the area.
The 27th Avenue corridor has become a sewer of crime, assaults, shootings, drugs, prostitution, sex trafficking, homelessness, graffiti, trespassing, street racing, daily fireworks noise, gunfire and almost any other felony crime you can name.
My name is Micaela Quihuis and we have been in the area for over 2 years. Our children's safety is our number one concern and have experienced prostitution, shooting and drug deals going on daily. I have been in direct contact with our local community action officer several times. My children are seeing these women walk around half naked and hearing gun shots nightly. Our community needs us to pull together and improve our neighborhood.
I have children that go to school on both sides of I-17 & have lived in the neighborhood for 36 years.
Every time the City has tried to clean up the crime on 27th it moves to 19th and you’ve guessed it… the City then tackles the crime on 19th and the problems cross over the freeway to 27th.
It is time to be innovative and think outside of the box and bring this under control. Phoenix needs to be the metropolitan leader it is and make a revolutionary change to address this yo-yo situation.
Our Business has been threatened by the crimes around the neighborhood. We wish to recreate our area into a safer place for families and businesses. Our customers refuse to come in sometimes due to the illegal activities that take place around the block. The illegal sex workers surround the neighboring schools and litter around the streets. We also have found illegal drugs in our parking lot, which is alerting to us because we don't want that on our property for the safety our our clients.
i am in favor of the safety ordinance, im tired of the violent street life coming into our neighborhoods and into our doorsteps. our children need a better place to grow up our crime and vavdalism is up too high and it seems like nobody is doing anything about it. i think its time for our streets our neighborhoods our comunities become a better place.
I am the Outreach Coordinator at Alhambra Traditional School. Our students are being exposed to crime daily. Crime along 27th Ave. continues to increase. Prostitutes are visible and verbal all day long. Our staff and parents are approached by prostitutes even with children in their car. Drug deals and homeless camps have increased. This increases other crimes to take place that puts everyone in danger. This plan passing is VITAL to gain resources that will keep our students safe.
I live blocks away from 27th Ave and my son attends a Alhambra Traditional School. Seeing these prostitutes, drug deals and homeless encampments on a daily basis is out of control. I myself have been calling about the prostitutes to the non-emergency police on a daily basis when picking up my son. They are anywhere on 27th between Luke - Montebello. These students and residents need protected. Also some hope. Something needs to be done. I am in favor of the safety and crime prevention plan.
