Are you really pressuring the Phoenix PD to release the protestors by threatening their budget? Are these the peaceful ones or have you lumped them in with the rioters who have looted, stolen and vandalized innocent businesses? Makes 0 sense why you would have to pressure the police to let go of the innocence but I have seen stranger things. If true, how can you justify to the voters and taxpayers, that the ones causing chaos in our backyard deserve to go back on the street to cause more chaos?
Increase funding for police so they can increase staffing as well as training and accountability. I'd love to see the old style policing where they are able to work more closely with the community members.
I was born in Phoenix in the 70s. I have lived in more "bad" neighborhoods than I can count and have lived in some "good" neighborhoods too. When I was a kid the police were not this militarized force against the community, rather they viewed themselves as part of the community. It is imperative that we ask ourselves how do we get all of our community to work for the good of all. More militarization of the police is not the answer. Civilian oversight and growing our community resources is.
Past this budget. And do so expeditiously. Public safety entities need to grow at the same rate of this beautiful City’s population. Phoenix needs more officers; not solely to provide support and deliver resources to the community, but also in order to reflect the diversity of our expanding population. Officers need to be able to do so with less of the stress and pressure that has been placed upon them to “do more with less.”
As a long-time citizen of Phoenix, I request that the budget fully fund measures to hold our police accountable for their actions toward people of color. We need a separate entity and independent review process to assure transparency. Thank you!
I live in an apartment complex. I witness domestic violence, child abuse, drug exchanges amongst other crimes daily. When I or other neighbors call, Police show up nearly 4-6 hours later. This is the result of not having enough police officers. Your citizens all lead very different lives, some are blessed to live in great neighborhoods and not have to call police, the rest of us have to live in the ghetto where police presence is essential to maintain safety and a sense of order for residents.
You give into the pressure of a small extremist group like Poder In Action, then it shows you could care less for the safety of your citizens and more for political gain. Defunding police may not hurt their small group but for the vast majority, it'll hurt and come at the price of jeopardizing OUR safety. If you want Phoenix to continue to grow and remain a relatively low crime-state, then we need more police officers to accommodate Phoenix growth.
We witnessed as a country what life would be like without Police officers. Cities, businesses and peoples livelihood destroyed.. People aren't going to change because there's less police. They will act as they have the past four days; dangerously. Many of us live centrally which as you know is crime-ridden. Please do not defund police. By defunding police, you place us in danger. You have the upper hand in society with the means to live in decent neighborhoods. The rest of us don't. Please.
We need this budget for all the police officers we can get. The last hiring freeze contributed to the years-long anti-police atmosphere, delayed 911 response times, & increased shootings. Either properly fund the police department so they can do their job as designed for the citizens of Phoenix, or close the precincts in the districts of the council members who don't want police, & transfer those officers to my district. If they don't want them, why waste our tax dollars on those districts?
Since Poder and Carlos Garcia want to defund Police, I invite them to fight the crime in my neighborhood. We have drugs, racing, prostitution, and shootings—what’s your solution?
SUPPORT PHOENIX POLICE DEPARTMENT. Phoenix grows by the day which means more people and more crime. Our officers are On the front line everyday in this city, they need the numbers and the gear to protect them and us. When I need Phoenix Police they have been there for me-but councilman Garcia...nowhere to be found.
The budget needs to be passed to ensure the police department has the officers they need to protect the people. They are already short staffed and wait times can be long as officers try to help everyone. They need more people!
In light of recent events, I understand there is need for change. Many of the public are calling for justice and in the absence of that 'justice' they feel the need to take matters into their own hands; resulting in anger and violence towards the police department. The people of this city need our love and support. By cutting funding to the people who protect us you are showing these individuals that all of our blue lives are compromised and are not worth your loyalty. All lives matter. Show it.
We must PASS this budget and make sure our police and fire departments are adequately funded. Recent events have once again proved how necessary their services are to the security and infrastructure of our great city. We have integrity and professionalism, and we must keep those values as our city grows to be sure we continue to thrive.
The Phoenix Police Department has displayed unprovoked, senseless violence towards our citizens time and time again. This city is statistically ranked HIGHEST in cases of police killing civilians. Enough is enough. Protect our citizens and redirect our hard earned dollars into programs that heal and educate our community, not kill us. We are counting on our leaders to keep us safe when law enforcement won't.
Y'all don't get how hard it is to live in Phoenix, especially in the ghetto parts where I live. Your communities are a mess. There isn't enough police and it shows. We have to wait hours for an officer to respond when we call, this wait applies to serious things too like shootings and assaults. We need police in our communities. Phoenix is growing by the day. More bodies = more crime. Fancy planters and wall art isn't going to matter when you have a community overrun with crime. SUPPORT.
This budget needs to PASS. I have lived in Phoenix for over 44 years. I live in an older community. Many of my neighbors have passed away and due to this many apartment complexes and rentals have taken their place. I've had my home broken into, drugs and gangs run rampant in my community. It takes police over four hours to respond because there aren't enough. I am a widow. I cannot defend myself. The police are always there for me. If you defund them, who is going to respond in my time of need?
We need this budget to pass. PPD has been understaffed for years! They put their lives on the line with less officers and less pay every year! It is time to finally support our officers. We need them! They are working tirelessly around the clock for our community. Now more than ever they need our support. These are fathers, mothers coaches, brothers, leaders, sons and examples for our community. Support the safety of our Officers, community and approve this budget. They are NOT disposable!
The men and women of our police and fire departments have worked tirelessly to provide 24-hour service to Phoenix residents. When everyone else was told to go inside and be safe, they answered the call to help those in need. It's time that city council show their support for these men and women and approve this budget!
The police of this city do not value accountability or public safety. Dion Johnson was killed on Monday night and still no information or evidence has be given in justification. Police officers have engaged in widespread warfare against peacefully protesting citizens for the mere act of not leaving when the police decided the protest should be over. The 2020 budget must include funds specifically for increased accountability or police violence will continue unchecked.

Pass the budget increase! Support and protect the livelihood of those who support and protect our communities!
