7 Protest Update

PPD has a long history of targeting and abusing people based on their political beliefs. They surveil and target Black and brown activists, hoping to silence them. Phoenix police go out of their way with violent tactics to harm and oppress people demanding justice. This is NONSENSE City Council!

Police have wasted over $12M in taxpayer dollars by saturating peaceful marches with expensive equipment and hundreds of extra officers. This is NONSENSE City Council!

The Phoenix PD’s response to the protests over the summer have been absolutely shameful. These activists are practicing their first amendment right to speak for the underrepresented voices of our community. The fact that some are now facing felony charges that could place them in prison is beyond ridiculous. These protests are a reaction by the people of Phoenix to say “ENOUGH!”. And the behavior by Phoenix PD to suppress our voices is indicative of the systemic issues within the department.

I've witnessed police needlessly and violently tackle an unarmed person. When i called in this abuse of power in,the sergeant claimed that other witnesses said it was justified, i said back, there were no other witnesses it was an empty street with me and them. These protests, of people that are asking to simply be treated like equals and people and not to be prejudged to be criminals, have seen the same police abuse and cover up. Despite being lawful and a constitutional right being exercised.

It's appalling that Phoenix PD and multiple law enforcement agencies, such as the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, have targeted and prosecuted critics of the police. They have weaponized the criminal legal system in order to intimidate, silence, and jail community organizers, activists, and demonstrators speaking out against police brutality. We demand justice for the hundreds of people targeted by Phoenix PD. Silence from elected officials only empowers police/MCAO to keep harming others.

The Phoenix Police department and others in AZ should be defunded and those resources redirected into actually helping the community. The way that police responded to protests this year is a clear indicator of the internal systematic problems of our government. Protesters are not the problem and the people deserve to have their voices heard. Any suppression of those voices will not bring peace but only lead to increasingly fervent action.

Phoenix police are already overly aggressive and retaliatory towards protesters within the BLM movement. There is no need to supply them with more ammunition to use against black and brown individuals. Phoenix does NOT need additional funds to further their cause of oppression towards those practicing their first amendment rights. Phoenix police is notoriously murderous. Aggressive use of force against demonstrators who are gathered peacefully must not be supported.

The protests aren’t the problem. We don’t need a ‘protest update.’ We need an update on what is being done to reduce the harm and power the Phoenix Police Department abuses to attack, arrest, and kill our community. That is what the community needs. We are asking council members to stop supporting one of the most violent forces in the nation and instead stand in solidarity with the people. This is NONSENSE City Council!

The Phoenix Police clearly do not hold public safety as a priority. After reading the “protests report” several details were missing and exaggerated. First, the cops almost always arrest black protesters and not white. Second, they never attend to the armed Boogaloo Boys and “Patriots” who show up to marches. Third, they intimidate protesters while we march. Fourth, not a single protest I have attended involved property damage of any kind.

In recent protests against police violence PPD arrested 3 children and a dozen people, who are facing felony street gang charges and could be sentenced to years in prison for doing nothing more than exercising their first amendment rights to assemble and protest the oppressive and relentless violence of Phoenix Police. This is NONSENSE City Council!

This is a damage report of the consequences of the protests which are a consequence of the inhuman treatment of the citizens PPD are sworn to protect but instead murder. The protests are a symptom of a deeper problem that PPD has yet to address. Ignore at your own peril and shame on PPD for their lack of compassion and empathy towards the plight of THE PEOPLE. Shame on the elected officials who stand by this false narrative report. Report instead on the social damage caused by PPD. Shameful.

We should defund the Phoenix Police Department and others in AZ because of their being among the top highest in police brutality and in shootings by police in the US. The police funds could go towards items dearly needed like unemployment and housing assistance (people almost dying can make them more likely to steal and be targeted by the police). In addition, we need better trans(gender) resources. My friend committed suicide this year due to lack of accessible options even before the pandemic.

Mayor & City Council actively support the PPD in using violent tactics & militarized weapons to silence organizers. Police ONLY attacked Black led protests. The community was exercising their first amendment right to assemble against police murders, PPD attacked with tear gas and rubber bullets & arrested over 300 people. PPD did not even show up to the post election protests where over 200 people with weapons gathered. We see yr racism. Your job is to serve the people, instead you are harming.

Hold officers accountable! No more excuses for their actions. These people were trusted to protect and keep our communities safe and yet instigate violence, terrorize protestors, and physically/verbally abuse BIPOC community members. No amount of “pressure” from the job should be justification for how they act on a daily basis, not to mention how they interacted with protestors this summer.

Phoenix police go out of their way with violent tactics to harm and oppress people demanding justice. This “protest update” needs to be accountable to its truth: it is an update on how police funding and property are valued greater than every individuals right to assemble. We demand change. We the people will keep showing up.

During the protests this past summer, PPD pushed protesters through my neighborhood, in the Garfield district where they terrorized the protesters trying to get home, and my neighbors. I have attended several protests, but was never so scared as when PPD were roaming the streets of Garfield, bullying people and making false arrests.
This department is the most violent in the country, do not blindly pass accept this behavior. Our police have failed the city.

The lack of compassion PHX PD has shown for the black and Latino community is the suffering they are creating for themselves, our PHX community and world as a whole. We will not be silent anymore, we will not stand idly by as you kill our people, THESE ARE HUMAN BEINGS, and we will not just let you guys do as you DANG well please without us being included in the decision making for OUR communities. Not only that, future generations. You all are killers, not heroes. Not protectors. KILLERS

The response of Phoenix PD to the protests against police brutality was racially biased and reckless. The job of police is to serve and protect. Phoenix PD continuously incited violence; threatening and assaulting protesters, and charging them with felonies to suppress free speech. Phoenix PD playing the victim after brutalizing protesters sends a message: They only serve and protect their own. Stop endorsing this abuse of power by increasing funding. You serve us. Don’t forget that.
