PPD has an extensive history of targeting and abusing people based on their political beliefs. They surveil and target Black and brown activists. They want to silence them. PPD goes out of their way with violent tactics to harm and oppress people demanding justice. This is NONSENSE City Council!

PPD is more of a risk to the community in their reckless spreading of COVID than the people arrested for things they could easily be cited for and released. Stop making unnecessary arrests and further exposing more people to COVID needlessly. This is NONSENSE City Council.

When the entirety of AZ is doing its part to flatten the curve, PPD is single handedly undermining those efforts. They could have cited and released the 354 people they put in jail, there was no need to expose them all to COVID. This is NONSENSE City Council!

Mayor Kate, your leadership is showing and it isn't pretty. You are not listening to the people that elected you who deserve and demand true safety. Why aren’t you recommending what we have told you before and continue to say? Until, we can abolish the police whose only job is to brutalize and cage Black, brown, indigenous, queer and our unsheltered neighbors, then it is City Council’s duty to help us hold them accountable and reduce the harm they cause every day. This is NONSENSE City Council!

Phoenix Police Department is one of the most violent and lethal in the country. What our department lacks is accountability, transparency, commitment to bettering community relations, and common human decency. With over a $700 million dollar budget and continued contributions from the dangerous and enabling PLEA, the risk to our community is not non-violent protestors fighting for justice but the dangerous officers harassing and policing our streets.

Police have wasted over $12M in taxpayer dollars by saturating peaceful marches with expensive equipment and hundreds of extra officers. This is NONSENSE City Council!

The protests aren’t the problem. We don’t need a ‘protest update.’ We need an update on what is being done to reduce the harm and power the Phoenix Police Department abuses to attack, arrest, and kill our community. That is what the community needs. We are asking council members to stop supporting one of the most violent forces in the nation and instead stand in solidarity with the people. This is NONSENSE City Council!

I support. Carlos Garlos District 08 told people on his Facebook to intentionally get arrested. He should have been arrested! I live Downtown and the people rioting destroyed our City, also making it impossible to safely walk around. They were violent and were arrested, as they should be. They have no consideration for the community living there and the mess they made not picking up their crap, littering everywhere. They cost our city a fortune, & because we're short police, couldn't get one 😥

Let's have an update on what you're going to do about the demands for reform and accountability driving the protests, on dropping charges, on the $14.5M in spending by PPD since May. The problem lies in the corrupt alliance between the city, PPD and MCA, OPLEA and their unwillingness to deal with the racism and violence in the PPD, and NOT those exercising their 1st amendment rights protesting. We WILL be back in the streets...it's time to listen to your community.

If police brutality wasn’t an issue, there wouldn’t be protests. If police didn’t blatantly harm, murder, and commit overt acts of brutality cause against our community, there wouldn’t be protests. Police brutality is the direct cause AND response to the protests. Their tear gas, their rubber bullets, their WAR CRIMES are why people are staying on the streets. This is wrong, now do something about it. Police are committing WAR CRIMES in front of your office, now DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

In recent protests against police violence our PPD charged folks with felony street gang charges for doing nothing more than exercising their first amendment rights. PPD could have cited and released the 354 people they put in jail, no need to expose them to COVID. Most of the arrests made are dismissed proving their pointlessness.

Also, Nothing on the agenda reflects the problems that motivated protest in the first place. We have been ignored, harassed, dismissed, postponed, but never heard.

I've written to the Mayors office, and to Councilwoman Pastor on this issue before. We don’t need a ‘protest update.’ We need an update on what is being done to reduce the harm the Phoenix PD does when targeting protesters.

Phoenix Police’s response to protests of Police Brutality is more Police Brutality. This report does not portray the hundreds of arrests made brutally by police, tens of thousands of dollars of the people’s property seized, tactics of instilling fear and grotesque charges of crimes for walking in the street.. protestors have been hit by their cars, stalked for miles and attacked at our homes. Their lack of accountability and transparency needs to be the focus of our tax dollars.

The ways that the violent PPD and corrupt MCAO have been working together is unacceptable - churning out trumped up charges like felony street gang charges in an attempt to scare people from expressing how fed up we are with these systems. This does not scare people, it angers us tremendously and it will not stop people from showing up. The city council's and mayor's support is violent - you are silencing and endangering black leaders, further marginalizing people, and wasting money.

Mayor & City Council actively support the PHX Police in using violent tactics and militarized weapons to silence Black-led organizers. Police ONLY attacked Black-led protests. The community was exercising their right to assemble against police murders and PPD attacked with tear gas and rubber bullets and arrested over 300 people. PPD didn't even react to the post-election protestors who were armed! Mayor, Council, PPD we see your anti-Black racism; you are complicit in harming us.

PPD has used excessive force ("less lethal munitions"), ambushed people (because "the law allows for individuals to be arrested at another time and/or location"), and manufactured felony charges in collusion with MCAO to attempt to shut down Phoenix Metro residents exercising their 1A rights against police violence. In other words, protests against police violence have been met with more police violence. None of us are surprised by that. This gaslighting and manipulative report is disgusting.

The PPD's response to this summers' protests was a disgrace. Demonstrating excessive use of force and arresting hundreds of citizens without cause, the police attacked people who were simply trying to exercise their first amendment rights. The attempted silencing of black advocates for justice cannot be tolerated. End political persecution!
