7 Protest Update

The MCAO and PHX PD and their partnership are totally corrupt. We see this exemplified in the countless cases where judges have refused to charge people based on police reports lacking probable cause; and then, MCAO brings the same charges to grand juries for indictment. People deserve their constitutional rights to assemble and freedom of speech. You know the body camera footage would display your abuse of power. This report is. I thing but a PR ploy. This is NONSENSE City Council!

The protests are not the problem, you are. The City Council needs to stand with the community and move to abolish the Phoenix Police Dept. for its murderous, reprehensible tactics and suppression of the right to free speech and assembly. PPD clearly does not serve us and if the City Council members will not listen to the people they represent then they will be replaced with people who do.

PPD only targets Black-led protests. PPD did not even show up to the post election protests where over 200 people with weapons gathered at MCRO. We don’t need a protest update. We need an update on what is being done to prevent PPD from abusing, attacking and arresting peaceful protesters.

Mayor & City Council actively support the Phoenix Police in using violent tactics and militarized weapons to silence Black led organizers. Police ONLY attacked Black led protests. The community was simply exercising their first amendment right to assemble against police murders, PPD attacked with tear gas and rubber bullets and arrested over 300 people. PPD did not even show up to the post election protests where over 200 people with weapons gathered at MCRO

The protests aren’t the problem. We don’t need a ‘protest update.’ We need an END to PPD violence and their silencing of first amendment demonstrators. We need an update on what is being done to reduce the harm and power the Phoenix Police Department abuses to attack, arrest, and kill our community. That is what the community needs. We are asking council members to stop supporting one of the most violent forces in the nation and instead stand in solidarity with the people.

Police have spent over $12M in taxpayer dollars on excessive equipment and manpower to antagonize, suppress and assault demonstrators. When I look around this city, our city, the need to invest these funds otherwise is obvious and devastating. Stop these assaults! Stop and drop the charges!

In recent protests against police violence PPD arrested 3 children & a dozen people, who are facing felony street gang charges & could be sentenced to years in prison for doing nothing more than exercising their 1st amendment rights to assemble & protest the oppressive and relentless violence of PPD. This is NONSENSE City Council!

PPD has a long history of targeting and abusing people based on their political beliefs. They surveil and target Black and brown activists, hoping to silence them. Phoenix police go out of their way with violent tactics to harm and oppress people demanding justice. This is NONSENSE City Council!

Phx PD is a corrupt fear-mongering organization using abusive tactics to maintain power. During protests they have been violent. They have tackled, shot, gassed, and arrested people peacefully utilizing a right guaranteed to them by the first amendment. It is embarrassing that this council discussion is finally happening months after the death of Dion Johnson and the continued appalling behavior by police and the DPS. Police don’t make people feel safe, they instill fear and anger instead.

It's absurd that felony gang charges are being used against protestors exercising their first amendment rights. The logical tautology of the institution being protested being in charge of how they can retaliate *against protestors* is the definition of injustice. The arrests of protestors during a pandemic, putting them at risk for COVID, is ridiculous. This situation is infuriating - release protestors, drop the charges, &start the serious work of reforming the Phoenix Police Department.

Police agreed to cite and release people at the beginning of the pandemic, before the infection rates were as high as they are now. Despite that, PPD has made hundreds of arrests - one night over 200 people were arrested for marching against police violence. This is NONSENSE City Council! As a Public Health professional, I urge the City Council to take our plea for justice seriously.

The community doesn't want to hear about how the protests have affected police, they want to know what Council is going to do about the rampant abuse of power by Phoenix PD in collusion with MCAO. Hundreds of people exercising their 1A rights have been falsely arrested and suffered harm at the hands of these corrupt agencies. Shouldn't the sheer number of protests and people out in the streets be a sign to you that the people have had enough of police brutality? Do something, this is nonsense!

Political prosecutions must never be allowed to stand. This is NONSENSE, City Council!

What a telling title choice for what this agenda item is about, it really speaks to the City’s motives and interests. The protests aren’t the problem. We don’t need a ‘protest update.’ We need an update on what is being done to reduce the harm and power the Phoenix Police Department abuses to attack, arrest, and kill our community. That is what the community needs. END POLITICAL PROSECUTION! LISTEN TO THE COMMUNITY! DEFEND THOSE MOST IMPACTED BY POLICE ABUSE! END MCAO/POLICE ABUSE!

These arrests were unnecessary and every single judge involved agreed because they were all dismissed. But putting those hundreds of people in jail potentially created countless superspreaders. PPD is singlehandedly undermining the efforts of our community to flatten the curve. This is NONSENSE City Council!

Protest is a right and the disproportionate police harm towards marginalized groups must be addressed. The community grievances should be heard and answered.

MCAO and PHX PD continue to collude in a violent campaign to silence and disappear those who exercise their first amendment rights to demand justice. In countless cases judges have refused to charge people based on lacking probable cause, then MCAO brings the same charges to grand juries for indictment! You have the power to fight this vile fascist behavior, but you all either actively support it or you waste time with performative bs. Get it together. This is NONSENSE City Council!

We have the right to assemble and protest. We don't need an update on protests; we need an update on what is being done to protect EVERYONE in the community while they exercise this right.
