As a minister in the Universal Life Church, I am appalled by the proposal to award almost $7 million to Phoenix PD (and other agencies) for all the violence and abuse they inflicted on Black Lives Matter protesters. PPD brands non-violent protests by people of color as riots to completely absolve themselves of their own extreme and unnecessary retaliation. To reward these agencies for their violence, and blame their abuses on civil rights activists, is immoral and unconscionable. Shame on you.

Absolutely no. These people are protesting for their lives. The PD are the violators.

Reimbursing PPD for the events of this summer is another act of violence against Black citizens in our city. BLM protests were NOT riots; it is appalling that the City of Phoenix would suggest such. Police presence at the protests was more intimidating than any act the protesters themselves did commit. Please do the right thing and vote no here.

The City of Phoenix is voting on whether to allow permission for a state grant of nearly $7M to make its way to the Phoenix police department (one of the most violent and deadly in the nation) in response to the summer uprisings. This is entirely backwards. The uprisings denounced the murderous anti-Black military police state as it exists in America. The next step forward can not include handing over more funds to police for any purpose. You must not continue to support the PPD. #DefundPhxPD

The citizens of Phoenix have already demanded a reduction of the Phx PD's exorbitant budget, this is in direct opposition to the wishes of the people.

Absolutely not! Fund community not cops PPD did not spend $7 million over the summer
How about you give 7 million to help with legal fees for non-violent protestors facing political prosecution? Or 7 million could help end evictions, or provide housing and healthcare? Instead you reinforce false narratives about protestors against police brutality being “rioters” and “terrorists.”

BLM Protest were NOT riots; it is appalling that the City of Phoenix would suggest such. A process of introspective reflection and evaluation needs to occur for agencies across this state. Many entities are declaring racism a public health crisis. As this council and police officers are a part of public health, you should be declaring anti-racism a priority. Malcolm X once explained that it is not enough to take the knife out of our backs; we must also heal the wound. Realize you need to do both

This is ridiculous. PPD does not need more money. Hundreds of people were stripped their right to their 1st amendment by PPD, including myself. I was arrested and spent 36 + hrs in 4th ave for what?? BET you won't pay me for my time wasted & emotional damage!! Police are protecting white supremacist. They didn't react with violence, as they did to BLM protesters, to the white supremacists that broke into and violently assembly outside the county recorders office in DT phx.

Phoenix Police Department laid siege to my neighborhood (Garfield) in 2020, yanking my neighbors off their porches, releasing tear gas and pepper spraying and hunting down community members like they were insurgents in a war zone. How can this governing body turn around and decide to use taxpayer dollars to reimburse this, and other shameful events of 2020!??

To reimburse PPD for the events of this summer is to commit further violence against Black and other oppressed residents of this city. Do not continue to feed this murder machine. Vote no. #DefundPhxPD

Thursday May 28th, 2020 our house, the corner house of 15th ave and Woodland, was bombarded by tear gas by State Troopers battling with protestors who were wearing flip flops and tshirts. I experienced over excessive force from the Troopers and Phoenix PD onto teenagers who weren't doing anything but yelling for equality. Calling these protests riots is 100% wrong. Phoenix PD needs to be held accountable for their incompetence in the Constitution.

Where could this $6.9 million be sent where it would save lives instead of endanger them? What advances could we make for peoples' daily lives? Healthcare? Education? Climate change science? Public transportation? Rent relief? How much more evidence do you need that continuing to throw money at the PPD will not fix anything? Begin to disengage from this murderous, racist machine -- vote no today. #DefundPhxPD

Every time you give Phx PD more money, you display your anti-Blackness. The demand to defund the police has been clear since long before the summer of 2020, and it’s just a matter of time before those demanding it outnumber your supporters and we fill your seats with someone else. NO more money to Phx PD. Vote NO. #DefundPhxPD

I strongly oppose allocating more money to our city’s violent police department. The protests over the summer showed the will of the people to value Black lives over war weapons for a state-sanctioned gang. (A gang who won’t even wear masks while harassing unsheltered neighbors in a city that refuses to shorten a weeks-long wait for shelter beds.) Please do the right thing. Money for people, for shelter, for education - not police!

City Council is voting on whether the Phoenix Police Department deserves to be given $6.9 MILLION of federal disaster relief money in the aftermath of the summer demonstrations. This is baffling. After witnessing the outrage and pleas for justice from Phoenix residents being actively targeted and killed by this police department, how can this governing body turn around and decide to use taxpayer dollars to reimburse and reinforce the people doing the killing? Not another cent! #DefundPhxPD

We are living in precedent-setting times. What precedent do you wish to set for this beautiful city here forward? That its leaders not only condone but support strong arm militant tactics over its citizens? As a tax payer and voter who is hardly political put knows a rat when I see one, I join the other citizens here and respectfully ask you to VOTE NO on this measure. Please set the correct precedent today.

Language matters. Actions matter. Black Lives Matter. As you mislabel non-violent protesters as rioters and continue to fund violent white supremacists, you display what matters to you. Money talks. Let your language and actions show you value people over property. Oppose the nearly $7 million reimbursement to the Phoenix Police Department. #DefundPhxPD
