As a Unitarian Universalist, I believe in people over profit.
I'm speaking virtually at the UU conference where Naomi Klein is the keynote. In Shock Doctrine, she warns that in times of crisis, we can overlook loss of our rights out of fear for perceived "safety."
Our community clearly asked for Civilian Oversight, which council and Mayor Gallego voted for. To fulfill that promise, the Office of Transparency and Accountability + Traumatic Response Unit need to be FULLY funded in this budget.
I oppose any increase in police force and infrastructure budget. I support true, accountable civilian oversight of the police force.
We could also use better affordable health systems access for more people including mental health and substance use disorders. We could also use better bike lanes. We could also use better community education and arts outreach programs. There's about a dozen things I can think of that we could use that would be better than more police.

I strongly oppose the budget. City council needs to fund civilian oversight and relief for undocumented people NOW! The city of Phoenix needs to understand the urgency and context in which city of Phoenix residents are enduring. We need city of Phoenix leadership to step up for the benefit of all our communities.
Civilian oversight is essential to keep funding and supporting our undocumented communities who have been essential during and before this pandemic is a must.
Structural denial of humanity looks like: child concentration camps, racial profiling laws, cultural bans, family separation, exploitation of construction and farm labor, and forced exclusion from human/social services. Racism is violent, and for undocumented people that violence has been well documented. Why would we Ignore this? Pandemic responses should prioritize our cities uniquely vulnerable communities. To omit a fund for undocumented people is to reinforce inequity, to reinforce racism.
Civilian oversight of police is essential for the safety of our communities. Please ensure this remains funded. I am also in strong support of substantial relief for undocumented people affected by COVID-19. This budget MUST be in the interest of our community members, and it cannot be without funding these two essential items!
I am in strong support of civilian oversight of police and substantial relief for undocumented people affected in the wake of Covid-19. I can not support a budget that does include these. I believe both are vital for the health of our communities.
As someone who rides between 70-100 miles a week, I find it essential that Phoenix focuses on creating safe and deliberate bicycle infrastructure. This will help with safety, accessibility, and sustainability of our city.
Police don’t solve the problems our communities are facing. It’s time for us to invest in what really makes our communities thrive--workers, teachers, and community members who have helped Phoenix residents survive this pandemic. The pandemic cannot be used as an excuse to dismantle police accountability. Civilian oversight must remain funded!
As a Phoenix resident, I oppose a city budget that does not include a COVID-19 relief fund for undocumented residents and funding for civilian police oversight.
As Phoenix continues to grow, our collective investments in light rail, walkability & bicycle infrastructure will be paramount to a sustainable future. The City must continue to invest in protected bicycle lanes, light rail expansion, trees & shade..so that Phoenix can lead the way as an example of a sustainable, multimodal city.
Please provide full funding in this budget for a Civilian Oversight Board, including the Office of Transparency and Accountability & Traumatic Response Unit.
This budget should support vulnerable communities and should include mental health services, jobs programs, affordable housing and food. It should also include support services for refugees, asylum seekers and the undocumented. The need among these folks is urgent.
Pandemic recovery funds should directly benefit the people who need them.
On behalf of the Sustainable Communities Collaborative, which has advocated for quality urban development along light rail since 2010, we support continued planning, funding, & construction of the South Central/Downtown HUB extension, Northwest Extension II to Metro Center, & CAP/I-10 extension to our State Capitol. We must get through our current troubled times & remain positive & forward-thinking as a community that provides essential services for residents & visitors alike. Thank you.
The proposal of a civilian oversight commission is not well thought out or representative of the majority of Phoenicians. Running a parallel investigative process to the PPD Professional Standards Unit (comprised of well-trained professionals) will inevitably create issues. 3 different groups, 2 of which have civilian representation, already review their work. During this challenging time, municipalities are struggling to provide basic services. This is not the time to implement redundancies.
It is critical to include funding for civilian oversight and immediate relief for undocumented members of our community. Please put the well-being of all people in our community first, starting with those most impacted.

We need a budget to keep our communities healthy, not to increase police. Provide funding for undocumented community.

Fund services and resources creatively, and not just police. Police are not the solution to all of the ails of Phoenix.
Please fund Civilian Over-site and relief for undocumented people. Thank you for considering
