Create a relief fund for undocumented people! We are calling on city leaders to create a privately resourced relief fund for undocumented people affected by COVID-19! Phoenix depends on undocumented people to complete the Census to get millions of dollars in federal funding, but won’t include us in the coronavirus relief programs and many other services. You want to count us, you must fund us!
We demand a budget for a healthy #PHXFuturo, not more policing! It is our right to live in healthy communities, where the well-being and needs of people and neighborhoods are put first. Police don’t solve the problems our communities are facing. It’s time for us to invest in what really makes our communities thrive--workers, teachers, and community members who have helped Phoenix residents survive this pandemic.
This budget does not prioritize supporting people in Phoenix. Council must:
Create a privately resourced relief fund for undocumented folks impacted by COVID.
Fund programs that help us recover from the pandemic & don't give more money to the police.
Fund programs like housing, jobs, access to food, and mental health resources that don't involve the police.
Keep funding programs that keep the police accountable, like the Office of Accountability and Transparency and the Traumatic Response Unit.
Re the budget, please: create a privately resourced relief fund for undocumented people impacted by COVID-19; fund programs & services that will help everyone recover from the pandemic as the highest priority!; fund programs like housing, jobs, access to food & mental health resources; fully fund the Of. of Accountability & Transparency & the Traumatic Response Unit; keep in mind that a safe/healthy Phoenix requires a LOT LOT LOT more than just funding more police officers!
We need a budget that invests in the programs and services that make us safe and healthy. $700 million to the police does not make us safe, it does not protect us from COVID-19. We also need to provide support to our undocumented community. We need city council to step up now! We need Mayor Gallego to take a stand to support our most vulnerable communities instead of continuing to unncessarily investing in police, who do not solve any of our problems. #PHXFuturo
With the budget decisions in April, I am disappointed there wasn’t a public engagement process to elicit feedback and equally disappointed there wasn’t a public engagement process between May 5th and May 19th.
I welcomed Item No. 61 of the 5/6/2020 agenda that read, “…We are currently working on a public engagement process to elicit feedback on potential budget reductions should those become necessary. That process will likely take place in June or July.”

Please put money into services that create real community safety. Fund health care, services to provide housing, access to food, and help folks recover from covid. Stop funding police and invest in building strong healthy communities. Police terrorize black, brown, poor, queer and indigenous people and we demand change.

This crisis must not be used as an excuse to exclude undocumented people and avoid police accountability.
