PLEA has too much control over process where it does not belong and lacks the transparency needed. Funding should be directed social serviced and housing efforts.
I strongly oppose item 36 because as a Phoenix resident I see that our cops have quite enough funding while other beneficial community services suffer directly because of that. I demand transparency of what goes into the budget that serves our community. PLEA is unacceptable and lacks the type of transparency that the community is asking for. No negotiations behind closed doors!
I oppose the police union contract proposal, and the process by which it is negotiated. Phoenix residents deserve transparency from their public servants and elected officials. By hiding a negotiation behind closed doors, your intent to make a backroom deal out of sight of those who will be impacted becomes clear. Citizens of Phoenix will not accept a smoke filled room giving more money to cops or greater ability for cops to avoid accountability when they cause harm.
By funding a violent lobby whose sole interest is increasing its authoritarian power over the people it is supposed to “serve and protect”, and then bowing to every demand of that lobby, the City is shielding itself from public accountability. This empowers PLEA to negotiate away city policy---on a biennial basis---PLEA is beholden to nobody. PLEA’s only goal is to lobby this council to give them more resources and authority with less oversight. This is dangerous and unacceptable.
No a las negociaciones a puerta cerrada, nada que dé más dinero a la policía, nada que disminuya la transparencia y la responsabilidad
y nada que le dé más control al sindicato de policías.
Strongly oppose the PHX PD MOU. More than ever we deserve openness and transparency in this process. PLEA has too much control in a process where it does not belong. Additionally, funding should be directed towards programs affordable housing, social services and other community health initiatives not affiliated with policing.
I strongly oppose agenda item 36 - the people of Phoenix deserve transparency in negotiations on our behalf. We want to reinvest in the community, not in cops.
I oppose because Phoenix residents deserve transparency and wider inclusion in conversations that pertain to the allocation of city funds, especially increases in PHX PD budget when our police department consistently abuses their power to the detriment of marginalized community members. Additionally, we expect our city council to ACTIVELY pursue and invest in alternative solutions to public health that do not rely on policing and the criminalization of poverty.
I strongly oppose the current PHX PD MOU. We shouldn't be rewarding police officers with more money, raising their wages, increasing their benefits, all while negotiating this contract behind closed doors, and giving PLEA more power they don't deserve. Tax payers should be given a seat at the table in the process of deciding where their tax dollars are spent. The lack of transparency and accountability in this department would only be furthered in this contract. Our citizens deserve better.
The city council cannot continue to fund an organization that works against the people of phoenix and claim to serve us. Phoenix needs support for its people, not police!

No privately negotiated new terms with the police union, PLEA - Phoenix Law Enforcement Association. This is not acceptable. We demand transparency in this process. We demand access to our tax dollars for services OTHER than militarization of police.
Strongly oppose! It is completely unacceptable for PLEA/PHX PD contracts to be negotiated behind closed doors. Contracts funded with OUR tax payer dollars. The PHX PD already received a budget increase despite the communities demands to reallocate that funding to other necessary community resources such as affordable housing, affordable child care, social services, mental health services, etc. We want increased transparency and increased accountability. PLEA does NOT need more control.
How can we as a people decide to give more power and less transparency to one of the most violent police depts. in the country? No more money to police! We need to invest in our community! No closed door negotiations! Phoenix PD needs more accountability and giving more power to PLEA is the exact opposite of what the people want.

Transparency is crucial!

I oppose for the following reasons:
No negotiations behind closed doors
Nothing that gives more money to cops
Nothing that decreases transparency and accountability
Nothing that gives PLEA more control

No secret negotiations! We deserve a transparent process. The public should be allowed to have a say in where their money is going.
