44 Adoption of the Tentative 2020-21 Annual Budget (Ordinance S-46650)

As a former prosecutor I’ve learned in 2019 Phx PD ranked 8th in nation for officers killing civilians.

All police funding needs to go to the oversight committee to decide where and how to allocate.

We never see the businessman suspected of stealing arrested instead we police:

using a counterfeit $20 bill to buy groceries during a pandemic

    selling loose cigarettes-Eric Garner

making eye contact with an officer or running while black-Freddie Gray

    It stops with funding oversight.

I would like the City of Phoenix to pass a budget that supports strong healthy communities and more community programming such as after school programs and a better transportation system, instead of more funding towards the police.

I am a teacher in Arizona & think that instead of funding the police department, which by the way is one of the most violent police departments in the country, you should fund education & teachers. You should put more money towards housing for homeless, mental illness initiatives, community development & enrichment."

I oppose. I believe funds would be better spent on services that heal our community- health and human services and education.

I ask the City of Phoenix to reconsider the proposed $944,680,555 allocated to our public safety department for 2020-2021 fiscal year. It is imperative to redirect funds of the program to programs that heal, educate, and enrich our community instead of continually funding the police to allow for more brutality. Please allocate more funds to the civilian review board.

Hello, my name is MaryAnn Eldon and I live in area code 85006. To make our city a safer place, please implement the following. Defund the police by 25% and move that money into programs that create safe and healthy communities; Pass a budget that prioritizes community health and not police pay raises; Pass a budget that supports police accountability, and end collaboration between Phoenix Police and ICE. The current police department does not protect ALL citizens, so we need to start over.

I oppose the increase in spending on our public safety department because I believe it can be used for more community enrichment and healing. For healthcare, education, mental health care, affordable housing, and safer alternatives to policing.

From a mother of a son sitting in prison, I support the police 100%. When i realized the hurt and pain my son inflicted on complete strangers for the benefit of himself i was broken. It was PHX PD that comforted me, accepted me and helped me. No neighbor came to help. No community service facility was there to help. The police were. Please fund this so that they can have the tools to prevent what my son did to so many. Thank you.

As a resident in the greater Phoenix Metro Area, I oppose increasing funding for the Phoenix police department. Now is the moment of change. Please invest these tax dollars instead to schools, mental health services, and public health initiatives and other such community development that will be of greater benefit to our communities.

I'd love to see part of the 74% budgeted for Public Safety reallocated to things like mental health care, job placement, social services, art and community programs, etc. These things can help make sure basic needs are met as well as address crime and safety in a way that's more conducive to overall community health and safety.

Policing as it exists today is broken. I urge you to begin exploring a safer way to keep our city safe.

Opposed - Invest in education and directly supporting the communities / families in other ways rather than focusing on Public Safety (~85% of the budget) of which would be used to further spread violence and discord among the residents and citizens of Phoenix.

Police misconduct cannot go rewarded. Please fund the Police Review Board and defund the Phoenix Police. Community enrichment and accountability are much more worthy causes to fund. People are being killed! Do something!

I oppose. We need to defund the police. Please redirect the funds to other programs that will help minority communities, also programs for education and health.

I am commenting to demand that those voting reconsider the proposed budget which STRONGLY favors the police department over the community. As a community we are asking that funds be redirected from allocated police funds to the community development & community enrichment budgets. The City of Phoenix needs/deserves policing alternatives. I ask that you de-fund Phoenix PD, ranked highest nationally for civilian killings. Instead, fund policies/programs that will create & sustain a safe community.

I believe this is a step in the wrong direction. We should invest more money into our schools, and public well being.

This funding used to police citizens could be better utilized elsewhere. Our education system is failing. The lack of respect for our community is directly related to misuse of our tax dollars. Giving more money to the police sends a clear message that we would rather punish than reward. Fostering respect in a community through education is how you prevent crime; policing is how you capitalize on crime. This budget absolutely needs revision!

I oppose the current budget allocation. Please reconsider the proposed $944,680,555 allocated to our public safety department for the 2020-21 fiscal year. Our community asks that you redirect funds to programs that heal and educate our community, such as community development and services, housing, education, healthcare and public transit. The Police department needs more oversight.

We demand that funding proposed for the Phoenix Police Department is allocated toward the City Review Board - so the board can properly do the jobs they were appointed to do (hold officers accountable, make timely decisions, use funding for data/research, etc.).

Please reconsider the proposed $944,680,555 allocated to our public safety department for the 2020-21 fiscal year. Our community asks that you redirect funds to programs that heal and educate our community. Increase the proposed $24.760,742 and $26,837,014 budgets for community development and community enrichment. The Phoenix Police Department is statistically ranked one of the highest in the country for cases of police killing civilians. Defund the Phoenix PD.
