When Calvin C. Goode’s memorial was zoom-bombed last week by violent white supremacists, Mayor Kate said “This does not represent who we are as a city or as a country.” If you truly believed this “isn’t who we are,” you wouldn’t be considering giving 7 million dollars to the most violent and racist police department in the country. This is EXACTLY who Phx City Council is--white supremacists supporting the violent arm of the state, Phx PD. Do better. Vote NO.

City Council is voting on whether the Phoenix Police Department deserves to be given $6.9 MILLION of federal disaster relief money in the aftermath of the summer demonstrations. This is baffling. After witnessing the outrage and pleas for justice from Phoenix residents being actively targeted and killed by this police department, how can this governing body turn around and decide to use taxpayer dollars to reimburse and reinforce the people doing the killing?

Continued increases to PPD budgets must not go unchallenged, especially when these fund increases are in response to demonstrations held specifically against police violence. What does it say to the people of Phoenix who took to the streets to demand that their city do better, when these funds are allocated to reinforce the racist departments that patrol them instead of improving their quality of life? Your white supremacist slip is showing, City Council. #DefundPhxPD

Interesting how you label the Phoenix Black Lives Matter protests as “riots” when this is about exercising First Amendment rights to freedom of assembly and free speech. Yet white folks threatening our Capitol and elected officials are somehow “protestors”? Sorry, City Council, you don’t need $7million in support of police behaviors…though if you want to take $7million of the PD budget in support of community housing and health programs, I’m all for it.

This will not lead to protection. This will lead to the police becoming more militarized and more deaths. The fact y’all think this is a good way to spend money and time instead of using it to assist BIPOC communities during a pandemic only shows that this isn’t about safety, it’s about trampling on and destroying black and brown bodies. Do better. Y’all have got to do better than this. Otherwise this is exactly who you are. Y’all should ask yourselves if you’re okay with that.

There is not a single reason PPD deserves a single cent of funding after being the most lethal force in all the nation. Shame on you. WE WANT THE FUNDS to go to PPE, hospitals, schools, to small business funds and to feed the 1 in 3 hungry in Arizona. We are watching.

City Council calls white supremacists who broke into the County Recorder’s office “protestors” yet when Black folks take to the streets to exclaim Black lives matter, Council labels them “rioters.” White extremists bring a guillotine to the State Capitol to intimidate Democratic officials, yet you think property damage justifies targeting and imprisoning Black and brown community members. Stop pretending this is about “law and order” when this is really about your racist beliefs. #DefundPhxPD

We can’t get PPE to our hospitals and we want to give millions to law enforcement? NOPE.

Phx PD should most definitely not get reimbursed for assaulting peaceful protestors. The police force being violent and racist is the reason protestors were even out there on the streets in that heat. If anything was damage during the protest it was because of the violence the police embody and enforce on so many marginalized communities. If city council chooses to support and fund Phx PD’s violent ways, it really shows how much you despise hearing the voices of those pleading for justice.

Exactly who are the “rioters” in this $7 million for “response to riot activity?” Surely you mean white supremacists who threatened the life of Katie Hobbs, her family, and Adrian Fontes? Or white supremacists who brought a guillotine to the AZ state capitol and called for a civil war? No, it’s obvious that you mean to reinforce the FALSE narrative that people speaking out against police brutality are the dangerous “rioters.” Stop spinning these lies. Vote NO.

i refuse to allow more of my money to go to enacting more violence against black and brown people. the phx police are notoriously violent and love to shift blame onto the people speaking out for justice

No riots occured in phoenix Arizona during this last year's protests. Paying Phoenix Police nearly 7 million dollars to brutalize and put innocent people in jail (during a pandemic, no less) is a miscarriage of justice. Furthermore, showing support for this request would be a clear example of the tone-deafness our communities suffer under every day from our supposed leadership.

Please oppose this for the sake of our communities.

There is no logical reason to give more money to Phoenix PD at any time, but especially right now when our communities are so desperately in need. Invest in communities, not in the police. Especially not in the most violent and deadly police force in the nation.

The City of Phoenix is voting on whether to grant nearly $7M to the Phoenix police department (one of the most violent and deadly in the nation) in response to the summer uprisings. This is entirely backwards. The uprisings denounced the murderous anti-Black military police state as it exists in America. The next step forward can not include handing over more funds to police for any purpose. You must not continue to support the PPD. #DefundPhxPD

This request for disaster relief is dishonest. The only disaster I saw was overreaction and brutality by the police in response to peaceful protests. Any money that is received should be spent on community programs and independent civilian oversight of the police.

The City is voting on whether to grant nearly $7M to the Phoenix PD (one of the most violent / deadly in the nation) in response to protests over the summer. It is hypocritical for the City to invoke the name of MLK on social media on Jan. 18 only to pay for the weaponization and militarization of PPD a few days later, ignoring the violence PPD carries/ed out against Black communities in Phoenix. These millions must be used on what really keeps people safe: housing, food, economic security.

I studied city budgeting at the U of A from an ex cop. He never taught me why I should care more about cops having funding than I care about kids not having food or people not having homes. We are in a PANDEMIC & the absolute LAST place ~ANY~ money should be going right now is to an organization that only furthers the lack of trust in our communities that are already experiencing marginally greater losses @ this time. The shame this department should feel for trying this & abusing their position

The violent Phoenix PD, the incompetent mayor Kate, and the corrupt city council have been terrorizing Black liberation activists and now you want reimbursement for the harms you’ve caused. You used weapons, both chemical and otherwise, to break bones and brutalize protestors NOT rioters. By considering this anti-Black measure, city council is showing they prioritize property and the needs of wealthy building owners over the lives of Black people.
