The anti-Black white supremacist City of Phoenix has been targeting Black liberation activists with violent arrests and false felony charges and now you want to get reimbursed for your violence. You've ignored the voices of the Black people impacted by your violence, but you rush to protect property and power. Even considering this blood money is disgraceful. #DefundPhxPD

I oppose this ordinance. Additionally I think we should defund and gradually dismantle the police department, and put our money and resources in public services instead. To “fight crime” we don’t need more military-grade cops, we need to put resources into programs and systems that address our basic needs. There’s less crime when there’s more jobs, more educational opportunities, more arts programs, more community centers, more mental health resources, affordable housing, etc etc etc

City Council is voting on whether to grant nearly 7 million dollars to the Phx police department (one of the most violent and deadly in the nation) in response to the summer protests. This is totally backwards, as the uprising was to denounce the murderous anti-Black military police state as it exists in America. The next step forward from here must not include handing over more funds to police for any purpose. You must not continue to support the PPD. Defund. Dismantle. Invest in community.

Phoenix city council has been ignoring the repeated demands of Black community leaders all year. This blatant choice to ignore is anti-Black and white supremacist. The Phoenix police department is well known as one of the most violent in the nation and they demonstrated this all summer by violently arresting protestors and community organizers. I support and echo Black leadership's demands to vote no on this harmful measure and to defund the violent Phoenix PD. We must DO BETTER NOW!

I was at home in the Garfield neighborhood watching TV on May 31, 2020 when the police hunted and gunned down young men and women who posed no danger to anyone. They filled my neighborhood with smoke bombs and rubber bullets. Later reports confirmed those who they arrested suffered injuries. Due to what I saw, I attended another protest later that week. At all times, the hundreds of people I saw were peaceful. I only saw the police escalate violence. They should not be paid overtime for doing so

Voting on whether to grant nearly $7M to the PPD in response to the summer protests is totally backwards! The protests functioned as a denunciation of the murderous anti-Black police state in America. Stop rewarding abuses of power. There must be consequences for the failures of the PPD or nothing will change. Instead of handing over more funds to police for any purpose, you must work to defund and dismantle the PPD and commit to investing in our communities.

One perspective I would like to give input on is police optimizing their budget for peacekeeping at public demonstrations. If we are handing over the bill every time they bring out riot gear to protests of 50 people, what incentive do they have to find more cost-effective ways to keep the peace?

There is a clear conflict of interest in having to be security at a protest against themselves. Also why don't they show up in force like this to the protests where a quarter of the attendees have guns?

The audacity to label the Phx Black Lives Matter protests as “riots” when it was simply Black folks exercising their 1st ammendment rights to freedom of assembly. Do you know what a riot actually is? A bunch of white supremacists beating a police officer to death with a fire extinguisher because they are angry that their guy didn’t win. City Council, your anti-Black rhetoric is inciting white supremacist violence here and giving $7M to Phx PD will only stoke the fire more. #DefundPhxPD

Continued increases to PPD budgets must not go unchallenged, especially when these fund increases are in response to demonstrations held specifically against police violence. What does it say to the people of Phoenix who took to the streets to demand that their city do better, when these funds are allocated to reinforce the racist departments that patrol them instead of improving their quality of life? Your sympathy for white supremacism is showing, City Council. #DefundPhxPD

Saying protests that are a response to living on stolen land in a white supremacist, anti-Black city are “riots” just shows Phx PD is still acting like the slave patrols they originated from. They kill Black and brown folks at disportionate rates and when the community takes to the streets to boldly exclaim that Black lives matter, Phx police hunts them down and drags them out of their cars to throw them in cages! City Council cannot continue to give PPD a blank check to brutalize. #DefundPhxPD

It is disgusting that one of the deadliest police forces in the nation wants to be reimbursed for their systemic violence against Black people. The council can't keep funding this vicious department. Defund Phoenix Police NOW.

I was threatened by PHXPD officers at a peaceful protest at which no laws were broken. Providing them with funds that they can use to surveil and harass citizens will only lead to less civil interactions between the populace and the police and will keep the people of Phoenix from exercising their constitutional rights. A new day is coming for Arizona and the council should realize that the citizens remember who is on their side. Do NOT rest your career on a department who makes only enemies.

THE AUDACITY of our city council ceases to surprise me. You think you can ask our federal government for reimbursement for police brutality without us noticing? BLM PROTESTS WERE TO DEFUND THE POLICE- how dare you ask for monetary help after using military weapons and armor against civilians expressing their Freedom of Speech? YOU made them violent when you tear gased us! This is a shameful and disgusting use of funds, especially during COVID, especially when our public schools are in trouble!

Seriously? Did anyone on city council actually attend any of the Phoenix Black Lives Matter protests? Labeling them as "riots" shows either a lack of understanding for the 1st amendment right to freedom of assembly or blatant disregard for rights of citizens in this country. Supplying PPD with more funds for violence they instigated... inconceivable.
