I oppose the proposed budget and urge council members to vote NO on this measure.
Phoenix PD is one of the deadliest forces in the U.S. and it’s devastating our community. INVEST in resources that advocate the best interests of the community: mental health & rehabilitation, education, housing–programs that ensure basic survival for some, while mobilizing opportunity and self-realization for others. When we have these resources, you’ll see a healthy city working and thriving together. Help us.
Please reallocate the grossly large funding of $745 million of the Phoenix Police budget into services that actually foster a safer city and protection of residents. There is no reason the police need 18x more money than community development and 7x more than human services.
We should not be giving the police more funding during this crucial moment. We have been neglecting our minorities and black community for too long. Defund the police and consider a better distribution of funds to improve our community and health.
Given the ridiculous allocation of funds to the Phoenix Police Department, I am opposed to the 2020-2021 budget. I want to live in a community that is focused on building up it's citizens, not policing it's citizens.
I oppose the 2020-2021 budget. An increase of $25 million to the PHX PD while other human and community support services are expecting a decrease is unacceptable. As an educator, referring my students to supports for community and mental health has literally saved their lives; we've also seen students slip while waiting for services as these areas are vastly under-resourced. With COVID, our most marginalized populations are the most vulnerable and needs support beyond the PHX PD.
I unequivocally oppose the disproportionate allocation of public funds to surveilling, punishing, and murdering Phoenix citizens on the pretext of maintaining "public safety." Safety maintained by violence is no safety at all. We need bold imagination to face the problems actually confronting us as a community: racist structures of violence, economic injustice, our murderous border policies, and the ongoing climate catastrophe.
Instead of defunding we need to add additional resources to the department for better training and continual mental health programs to detect officers who may potentially be experiencing burn out or need additional psych testing. Taking away from their budget will only lead to higher crime, longer response times and early retirement of officers that we do want working in our city. Sending in unarmed civilians to assist in dangerous situations is not an effective solution.
I do not support the 2020-21 budget. This budget does not represent the needs of the community. The money that is allocated to the police department should be reallocated to social and human services. I implore the council members to vote no.
I oppose this budget. Please vote NO! This money should be used to assist the community in areas that are lacking funds and need support. It should be allocated towards mental health, community programs, education, resources for the homeless. It should be used to strengthen and heal the community. Not to fund a corrupt system of brutality where officers are almost never held accountable for their inhumane actions. We need change and we need it fast.
I can’t believe this is even on the table, again! Fund the police department. I fully support keeping PD and Fire funded. They are understaffed and over worked as it is.
I oppose a $744 million budget allocation to the police force. I believe that instead this money should be split between various specialized departments which can deal with homelessness, domestic disputes, mental health checks, traffic and fractions, etc. When the city begins investing in community growth and social works programs the city will become safer and a violent police force becomes unnecessary.
I strongly oppose this budget. PHXPD is one of the most violent police departments in the country. The proposed amount for this such department is grotesquely bloated. Funds should be reallocated towards the communities of Phoenix so social ills can be addressed rather than criminalized and perpetuated. Housing, drug rehabilitation, mental health services, healthcare, education, after school programs, food security, etc. are the areas you should be focused on. Unacceptable. Listen to the people.
Phoenix police have the highest incidence of violence against civilians in the United States. This is unacceptable. Our tax dollars, which are won with my and all other working people's time and labor, is funding an organization which promotes violence in and against our communities. This. Is. Unacceptable.
I strongly oppose allocating $744 million dollars to the Phoenix PD. We need to demilitarize our police force and remove cops from schools, and instead invest in housing, healthcare, and education. What's so ridiculous about offering adequate support to the people in our communities?
I oppose this proposed budget to increase the budget for the police. This money should be allocated to education, community development, mental health and human services. Let us use this money to strengthen our community as a whole and stop rewarding a racially biased system.
My name is Kendelle Brown and I’m a Phoenix resident in district 4. I demand that the City Council vote NO on the 2020-21 budget on June 17th. Phoenix needs more mental health and affordable housing programs, not an increase in police funding. Especially in the middle of a pandemic, only $242 million to housing, human services, and community development is NOT enough. The $745 million spent by the council on policing should be moved to services that promote community development.
I strongly oppose this budget. Policing is an inherently violent institution and police officers do not maintain or promote public safety. All cops, 'good' or 'bad', uphold systems and enforce policies meant to criminalize black and brown people, poor people, queer people, and mentally ill people. It's time to rethink what public safety means to us. How do we 'protect and serve' our communities outside of the carceral state? Let's start by funding the services that actually work to protect life.
As a business owner in the neighborhood near the Homeless Services Campus at 12th Ave., I'm asking the City to fund continuous Police patrols in the area. Recent months have seen increases in people sleeping on the streets, and an increase in crime. This is not good for the residents, businesses, or the homelessness. Until a comprehensive plan to address the homelessness in our community, we need Police around the clock to protect everyone who lives and works, or is homeless in the area.
I oppose the proposed budget and urge council members to vote NO on this measure.
