I oppose the mask mandate. As a citizen, I have the right to decide what is best for my personal health and well being. As a public school teacher, I fear the implications of a mask mandate on teachers and students. Young students still learning vocabulary and language skills will no longer be able to visualize words and see a teacher mouth them. They will also no longer see expressions and emotions from peers covered by a mask, making it challenging to have social discourse and interaction.
Hypercapnia is when you have too much carbon dioxide (CO2) in your bloodstream. It usually happens as a result of hypoventilation, or not being able to breathe properly and get oxygen into your lungs. When your body isn’t getting enough fresh oxygen or getting rid of CO2, you might need to gasp or suddenly inhale a lot of air to balance your levels of oxygen and CO2. It can lead to increased blood pressure, headaches, muscle twitches, rapid heart rate, chest pain, confusion and fatigue.
There is NO reliable data that shows masks to do much of anything beyond harm the long term wearer. A decision that essentially removes the right to make medical decisions for one's self, is anti American, anti Arizona, and will only lead to further erosion of our rights as citizens. PLEASE do the right thing and support our rights to make our own medical decisions.
Ladies and gentlemen,
AS a computer scientist, I have been following the covid-19 statistics different sources including the CDC since January 2020, and I found that the statistics do not warrant the implementation of the Face Covering Policy.
I would like the opportunity to address the Council to discuss my findings.
Thank you and best regards,
I believe the scientific data that shows that wearing a mask protects both yourself and others from COVID-19. Please take this seriously and keep our community safe!
All the public health and scientific data indicate that widespread mask wearing is the simplest, most cost-effective way to dramatically limit the spread of the disease. Areas that have mandated mask use, both overseas and elsewhere in the U.S., have seen significant positive outcomes.
I strongly support the city wide mask mandate. As a Healthcare worker far too many people assume this "isn't going to happen to me". Well it can. To you, your family members, your neighbors. The mask is to prevent YOU from spreading it, especially if you are asymptomatic. This isn't about politics, it's about common human decency.
As published in medical journals, studies & medical opinion show that widespread, common use of facial coverings is unnecessary and ineffective. In addition, it is unhealthy and unwise for an otherwise healthy person to wear a mask for an extended period of time.
If this council passes a mandate requiring the use of masks, school districts within city limits will be compelled to force our children to wear them in school also. This would be dangerous and impractical to require of EVERY child.
Every time I've gone to the grocery store fewer people are wearing masks. I live with 2 family members who suffer from asthma and a 76 year old grandma. I can not risk getting this virus and bringing it back home to them. The fact remains, mandating masks will save lives. It will reduce and contain the spread.
Absolutely not. We are a free nation. You can’t mandate Abortions, birth control, the use of condoms, the amount of junk food people consume, and therefore can absolutely not mandate that we the people wear a mask. The nature of my health is between me and my Dr. not elected officials. I’m an American and therefore have constitutional rights. If those of Muslim faith can wear head wraps, than I as an American can refuse to wear a mask for FREEDOM purposes!
As a physician, I strongly support a mask mandate. All current evidence shows that masks significantly reduce disease transmission. Masks should have been mandated many weeks ago. AZ is currently on track for a scenario like the peak of the NYC outbreak and we must do everything we can to prevent it.
As an epidemiologist it is clear that this is the cheapest and easiest intervention that can make a meaningful impact right now on the spread of this disease. We have reasonable evidence that mask wearing alone could be enough to control the epidemic even though masks are not completely perfect. This is supported by multiple outbreak reports in multiple countries (including US - see Great Clips and CDC MMWR report on USS TR), laboratory experiment, and mathematical modeling.
Let's do at least one thing right in our city this week.
Enforce masks. Because so many people are not understanding that this virus is real, deadly for some, and can go unnoticed in most. A lot like racism. But since we've failed to protect our community from one virus, let's not mess up and fail to protect everyone from another.
I think it is very important for clear guidelines. I strongly support a mask mandate in the city of Phoenix. I know that many businesses cannot survive another stay-at-home order so we all need to do our part to minimize spread as much as possible. Masks are simple, effective tool to help.
I strongly support a mask mandate. It is the minimum we can do to protect our community and loved ones. How many more people have to die because people can't be bothered with the tiniest inconvenience of wearing a mask? How many more people have to get sick for our city to take action? We need our community leaders to step up, follow the guidance of our medical professionals, and set a standard to help protect us all.
I oppose the requirement for wearing masks. The state is not my doctor, has zero business telling me what to do with my body and health, and I'm sure the state doesnt want liability if something goes wrong also. Is the state purchasing these masks for us? Im sure they are not - and either way I will not wear them. I will not comply and I will visit another state for a while and spend my money there instead of AZ if I have too. NO to mandatory masks. It should be a CHOICE for employees as well.

Just know that any votes for yes to this will be an automatic vote against council members and mayor in any elections for me.

It's the LEAST we can do.
