I oppose the overfunding of PhoenixPD. Why is every effort made to support the departments, organizations, and people that abuse and terrorize their own citizens? Yet the programs and services that support OUR COMMUNITIES are constantly cut & criminally underfunded.
I am a Phoenix resident and strongly ask that you reconsider the proposed $944 million budget. I would much rather see our tax dollars spent to increased funding of pro-community programs and initiatives that focus on health, education, and community development rather than incarceration, fines, and police threats to our health, lives and livelihoods. Allocate our money to programs that tackle the root of our issues, not just sweep people under the rug and into the carceral or the morgue.
I strongly oppose efforts to increase funding to the Phoenix Police Department and instead ask you to commit to fully funding the Police Civilian Review Board. If there was ever a moment to show leadership, recognize the real problems and disparate impact generated by police violence on communities of color, and move us towards accountability and reform, this is the moment. Please leverage your power for good, for justice, and for the change we need to see here at home and across the country.
I do not support increased funding for a police department that is not held accountable for their actions against the public. A police department does not need military grade equipment it defeats the purpose to protect and serve. We need to hold police accountable. Let’s instead put this toward funding a facility for the homeless population at 12th ave downtown. Let’s find our schools and programs that support black business owners.
The operating budget doesn’t fund any auditing of policies and practices to protect our police during an increasingly dangerous period of time. Funding that oversight will ensure that our excellent police receive the funds they need to demonstrate enforcement of the Arizona and US constitutions against serious attacks, while also removing those who do not defend the same. As a combat veteran our police need support for doing the right thing, and correction when some of them do the wrong things.
Defund the Phoenix PD and allocate the funds to policies and programs that will create and sustain a safe city. These programs could benefit education, after school care, adequate housing, healthcare, and employment opportunities.
I strongly oppose this allocated budget toward public safety. In no way will these funds benefit our population as the current systems in place are not fit to protect and serve the people. These funds should be redistributed toward environmental/sustainable, education, and other community development and enrichment efforts. As an Arizona native and taxpayer, it will be a shame to see our money go toward perpetuating a toxic institution.
Please consider allocating some of the $944,680,555 set aside for the Phoenix Police Department into the Community Review Board and education. There is still a pandemic at hand. How come these riot police have full blown respirators and the public hospitals are filled with health care workers wearing trash bags and insufficient PPE?
The thousands of dollars going to the PPD MUST go to community enriching programs, housing, unemployment, and community development.
Reconsider the proposed $944,680,555 allocated to our Public Safety Department for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. Our community asks that you redirect funds to programs that heal and educate our community. Increase the proposed $24,760,742 and $26,837,014 budgets for community development and community enrichment, and decrease spending on hypermilitarization of police.
I oppose increasing Phoenix police funding. Their treatment towards black people and people of color is not reflective of a group supposed to be keeping the community safe. The additional funding should be going to fund education, jobs, and our communities.
As a Phoenix, AZ citizen, I strongly oppose this proposed budget. We must significantly decrease funding of the Phoenix Police department. The police need exponentially more citizen oversight. The toxic culture of violence in the Phoenix PD must come to an immediate end, and cutting their funding is paramount. The police have far too much control and have become a symbol of terror and betrayal in our communities. This budget must be adjusted to defund this dangerous force.
strongly oppose the increase to the Phoenix police budget. Our priorities should first be to our community. The Council must fully fund the community oversight board, the Office of Accountability and Transparency and community enrichment programs, terminate the relationship between Phoenix Police and ICE. If the city continues to exhaust the communities resources, instead of serving it, marginalized communities will always face severe inequalities.
As a resident of the city of Phoenix, I oppose the allocation of $944,680,555 to the public safety department. I'm tired of seeing cuts to education and social services while the budget for police increases. I want an end to police presence in schools, an end to police cooperation with ICE, and an end to the constant surveillance of Black and Brown people in Phoenix. It's time to defund the police and reinvest the money in community-driven solutions.
I strongly oppose adding to the public safety budget. Phoenix police is the most violent police department in America. Increased patrolling would allow for officers to discriminate more and commit more acts of violence. How about we focus on funding our crumbling education system. Or maybe help our overwhelming homeless population. I’m sick of seeing our police bully people and then just drive homeless people away from Scottsdale and Ahwatukee to be dropped off in Phoenix and Tempe.
Defund the PHXPD. The money should go to investigate police overreach and reevaluate those brought on to the police force as well as to combat those with multiple infractions of excessive force and police brutality.
Phoenix police department is statistically ranked highest in the country for cases of police killing civilians. Police forces across the country have proven that diversifying and implementing carious trainings have not and will not end police brutality. The city needs and deserves policing alternatives and investments in mental health, trauma services, education/ after school care, adequate housing, healthcare and employment opportunities.
