As a resident of Phoenix, I am disgusted by the amount of funding that goes towards the police department. The funds need to be reallocated towards other needs such as affordable housing and child care.

The budget for the police must be reduced and allocated to social service programs. Our cities requires more youth programs, sustainable housing, dependable nutrition, accessible education, mental health care, and other human services. We need to develop new programs to assess the main issues and root problems of our city, instead of ignoring them and using law enforcement to brush them under the rug.

The proposed budget would increase the budget of the police department. Money should be allocated towards community development areas like mental health services, education, and food/housing services, rather than increasing the funding for a violent police force.

I am concerned about the safety of my community with a city budget that provides endless resources to one of the most deadly police forces in the nation and cuts programs that are essential to our health and wellbeing. Divest from the police, invest in our community.

As a Phoenix resident, it is concerning that Phoenix PD is statistically one of the deadliest police forces in the country and you are proposing an increase in their budget while Arizona ranks 49th in the country for education. We need to defund Phoenix PD and use the money to invest in our communities & the people within them instead: affordable housing, education, mental health, reducing food deserts and access to health services.

The city has acknowledged that the PPD is in need of civilian oversight and has already had to allocate additional funds in support of this initiative. In light of this does it really make any sense to approve a budget which contains a $25 million increase to the same department which is in need of oversight?

Let’s reallocate those funds to build up our community - I see a lot of great ideas in the other comments!

The proposed police budget must be dramatically reduced for the benefit of our community. This grossly disproportionate funding of the police further enables them to militarize and brutalize our most vulnerable citizens. I demand that a meaningful portion of the budget be redirected to community programs, such as mental health support, public education, affordable housing, and resources for our homeless neighbors. Investing in these programs would dramatically decrease the need for police.

The police don’t need that much money. That money can be better allocated to providing for the homeless population of Phoenix, keeping open small business so we can ACTUALLY CLOSE FOR COVID19, speaking of which that money could be used to help COVID19 treatments!!
It can be given to schools so Red for Ed wasn’t a huge waste of time.
It can be given to citizens who can’t work during this time.
It can be used to better clean Phoenix during a pandemic. Do not give to police!

I strongly oppose the increase in the PPD budget! The money should be going towards the community and it’s members in need, we must stop funding the people who threaten the community’s most vulnerables’ safety!

The City of Phoenix must reallocate the proposed $25 million budget increase for the police department to social service programs. Instead of cutting community programs, funding for the police force needs to be severely curtailed. Defund the police now and redirect the money to services we need – mental health support, public education, drug prevention programs, affordable housing, arts programs, homelessness prevention, and jobs development.

We demand the City Council vote NO on the 2020-21 budget on June 17th. Phoenix needs more youth programs, sustainable housing, dependable nutrition, accessible education, mental health care, and other human services, not an increase in police funding. In the midst of a pandemic and mass police brutality protest, community development need to be prioritized over further militarizing one of the most statistically violent police forces in the country. $745 million on policing is unacceptable.

I as a citizen of Phoenix oppose the proposed budget funding. It is abhorrent the amount of money being allocated to the police when we NEED to redistribute funds to more social services. COMMUNITY FIRST. I don’t support the militarization of the police or the utter lack care for the safety of our community members.

These funds belong to the community! Improve our infrastructure! Take care of our homeless! Make community based programs flourish! Phoenix PD terrorize the community and their corrupt union protects them. Take away their money and invest it in programs that actually do good for people living in Phoenix.

I oppose the increase to Phoenix police department’s budget. Our city’s police department is one of the most violent in the US. Instead of increasing the PHX PD’s funding, you have a responsibility to use those funds to help the community.

I oppose the increased funding for Phoenix Police Department. It is shocking to see that more than 50% of the general fund is going towards PPD. Instead funds should be reallocated to community programs and education.

I oppose the increase to PHX police department’s budget. Our city’s police department is one of the most violent in the country; instead of serving and protecting us, they terrorize, brutalize, and murder our community members. Instead of increasing the PHX PD’s funding, you have a responsibility to use those funds to help the community.

I cannot support a budget that gives almost $1 billion to one of the most violent and irresponsible police forces in the country. Going forward with this budget amounts to explicitly telling the community that you don't care what we think. Defund the police and distribute the resources to areas that will actually improve our city, like Community Development, Community Enrichment, and Environmental Services.

I oppose funding PHX PD with $744 million dollars. Instead, we need to fund community resources that are more equipped than the police to handle non-criminal events. For example, we need to invest in social workers, counselors, teachers, parks, libraries, community organizations, and other public resources that will make our city safer, happier, and healthier.
