Please listen to the voices of the people, the community, and the nationwide protests and divest funding from the police into avenues that can better support the community — education, affordable housing, mental health care, public spaces and parks. The police budget is disproportionate to everything else and it shows — Arizona is one of the worst states in the country when it comes to education. We can make a change, and we are long overdue for one. Vote NO!
I oppose the budget increase for the Phoenix Police Department and insist the City of Phoenix divert funds to invest in community services. The Phoenix PD is recognized as the deadliest force in the country, our citizens deserve better. We must fund education, social programs, mental health care, public health and community services instead.
I oppose increase in funds allocated for Phoenix PD. Those funds should be redirected to community programs that are proven to help our communities, such as: housing assistance, healthcare, and education.
Before you vote today, answer this: Why is adding $25 million to a budget spent on stockpiles of ammunition, riot gear, and tear gas more important to you than the health of our children and the livelihood of our communities?"
I oppose a funding increase for Phoenix PD. Increase funding for community/economic development, human services, and affordable housing. All are proven to improve the lives of citizens and decrease the need for police presence in vulnerable communities.
We need to reinvest in education, affordable housing, mental health sources, after school programs, parks and public health services. The police budget does not reflect the priorities of our city. I oppose this budget and demand more allocation to community resources that are vital to the survival and prosperity of people, especially amidst a pandemic.
As Arizona continues to have the worst education in our country, I think it is in our best interest to stop giving the police more resources than they already have. They do not need this money. Our education, our social programs, and our citizens that do more for this state than the police, do. Demilitarize the police.
I hope the budget can be re-evaluated to defund the police force, allocating that money to education, clinics, homeless shelters, mental health orgs, community initiatives, etc.
The police are a vital part to keep people and neighborhoods as safe as possible. The office needs to vet candidates more closely prior to becoming officers. Please keep the police funded at all costs! There's been enough mayhem taking place already! BACK THE BLUE!!!
I strongly oppose the PHX police budget as is. The things that have been happening in the news over the past month are not new. And more policing has not helped anything. It is time that we invest in community organizations instead of expecting police to respond to all situations. As a child of domestic violence I know personally that police have no place in a DV situation. Invest in community supports! Your constituents are watching, listening, and expecting you to show up for US!
Our community deserves better! $745 million for the the nation’s DEADLIEST police force is unacceptable. Residents are tired of hearing there is no $ for essential services that serve our systematically disenfranchised communities. The fact is there IS money for education, affordable housing, homelessness, mental health services, arts, & youth programs but this council is CHOOSING police over investing in communities. This isn’t what residents want or need. Mayor & Council vote no on the budget!
I urge the Phoenix City Council to vote NO to the 2020-21 operating funds budget. Even just a slight decrease to the funds for the police department and increase to other departments can make a huge difference. Departments like community and economic development, housing, and Human Resources are scarce in comparison. The constant increase to the police department have proven inefficient through the years it’s time we finally help the community and increase the funds to other departments.
Phoenix needs more mental health services, youth programs, adequate housing, and employment opportunities, not an increase in police funding. In the middle of a pandemic, allocating only $242 million to housing, human services, and community development is not sufficient. The $745 million spent by the council on policing should be reallocated to mental health services, youth programs, adequate housing, and employment opportunities.
I oppose any increase in funds allocated for Phoenix PD. Those funds should be redirected to community programs that are proven to help our communities, such as: housing assistance, healthcare, and education.
The police department already receives a disproportionate amount of money. Instead, consider distributing this money to community organizations that could help build up the community.
PLEASE Allocate funds to community programs and services that will enrich and protect our community rather than putting bandaids on issues with police presence and incarceration.
Our communities strongly OPPOSE the proposed budget for it DOES NOT represent our needs. The City of Phoenix does not need $96,000,000 allocated towards the police force. Phoenix needs our community services, community development, and human services to receive those funds instead of less than $30,000,000 each. We demand that resources proposed for the police force be allocated to mental health services, community programs, affordable housing, after-school care, and employment opportunities.
I oppose the current adoption of this budget. There needs to be a significant cut and redistribution of funds from the PHX PD to services and programs that nurture our community. It is cruel that over 40% of the City's budget is being allocated to the PHX PD, the same dept. that's statistically ranked highest in the U.S. for police killing civilians. All of you are here to serve the people of this City not the Police. Listen to your community and take action.
