As a Phoenix native, and as a Black woman, I strongly OPPOSE this budget for police. We have seen an overwhelming amount of money spent on over policing, but not on training police how to interact properly with communities of color. We need the Civilian Review Board now! And the money we can use to fund it is sitting within the Phoenix PD budget. I am urging you to defund police, apply resources to the community and call for justice for Dion Johnson. I am Danaysha Smith and I am a voter.
I support Increased funding for Phoenix Police. Defunding police is not how you will make effective change in our community. We need police to be funded in order to serve and protect the people. By reducing funds you will be decreasing our police force and thereby not allowing proper staffing and officers to respond when needed. Don't hurt the majority for the wrongdoing of a few.
I demand that the Phoenix City Council allocate $3 million to the Office of Accountability and Transparency and Civilian Review Board in the 2020 - 2021 budget.
The proposed $944,680,555 allocated to Public Safety should be redistributed to increase funding to programs that create strong, healthy communities. The current $24,760,742 and $26,837,014 budgets for Community Development and Community Enrichment are shameful in comparison. Phoenix PD statistically ranks highest in the US for police killings. This is not public safety. Funds should be allocated for non violent crisis intervention training to teach officers de escalation strategies.
Reconsider the proposed $944,680,555 allocated to our public safety department for the 2020-21 fiscal year. Our community asks that you redirect funds to programs that heal and educate our community. Increase the proposed $24,760,742 and $26,837,014 budgets for community development and community enrichment. Defund the Phoenix PD and allocate 2020-21 city funds to policies and programs that will create and sustain a safe community.
I oppose this budget proposal. Reconsider the proposed $944,680,555 allocated to our public safety department for the 2020-21 calendar year. Our community asks you to redirect funds to programs that heal and educate our community.
This is a perfect time to commit yourself in a meaningful and significant way to a better Phoenix Police Department by increasing the proposed funding an Office of Accountability and Transparency (OAT) and Civilian Review Board (CRB) to meaningful levels. I understand that revenues are tight and predicted to be tight for the foreseeable future due to Covid-19, but this is an investment in our city's future, in equity and justice, and it should not wait. Let's begin the healing.
I oppose this budget how it currently stands. We demand that funding proposed for the Phoenix Police Department is allocated toward the City Review Board- so the board can properly do the jobs they were appointed to do (hold officers accountable, make timely decisions, use funding for data/research, etc).
I've lived in Phoenix since 1966 & have supported a Police Civilian Review Board for about as many years, I was so excited when the Mayor & Council finally voted to create such!! Now to sufficient funding because without such, the Bd cannot be successful. So please fully fund the CRB as well as the Office of Accountability & Transparency. The way to ensure public safety & peace is to have a police force trusted by the people & to invest in people & amenities they need & will use.
As a new business owner, I oppose the proposed $944,680,555 for public safety. We need funding to be directed towards public health and social services in order to foster a safer community. Our people and our economy suffer when we do not provide adequate resources for it to grow. The police and its over-policing of poorer communities prevent them from growing. This affects the small businesses there from expanding too. Direct funding to community development and community enrichment instead.
I strongly oppose. Our priorities should be our communities and not police pay raises. We need programs that promote health and education. I ask that you reconsider.
The proposed budget for the Phoenix Police Dept (PPD) needs to be reevaluated considering the PPD is ranked highest in the country for killing civilians, and the voice of the people here is speaking out loudly that the current state of the police is deeply flawed & unacceptable. The PPD doesn't deserve a 25 mill "raise" when their priorities are not the protection of the people. Please reallocate 25% of the current budget for the PPD and fund support for the community and Phoenicians well-being.
I oppose this budget. We should have a budget that fully supports a Civilian Review Board and funds programs and services that contribute to community health and wellness.
I think the campaign to defund this is a knee-jerk reaction to recent events that will only make the situation worse. Rather, I believe funding to police should remain important to the city, and I would like to suggest a productive usage of the funds not considered. Taiho-jutsu is a form of martial arts used by Japanese police literally meaning arresting art and is thought to be very effective at non-violent arrest. Japan has one of the lowest rates of police violence, so we should use their art
I strongly oppose increasing the PHX PD budget. Not only are they statistically considered one of the most deadly police forces in the country, more money should be used for community enrichment and development. The people need this money, the PHX PD doesn’t. I demand that the Phoenix City Council allocate $3 million to the Office of Accountability and Transparency and Civilian Review Board in the 2020 - 2021 budget.
Please Defund PHXPD
PHXPD is ranked one of the highest in the country of police killing civilians. PD’s across the country have proven diversifying & implementing various trainings haven’t & won’t end police brutality.
PHX needs policing alternatives, investments in mental health, trauma services, education, after-school care, adequate housing, healthcare, & employment opportunities.
Defund PHXPD & allocate 2020-21 city funds to policies & programs that will create & sustain a safe community.
Reconsider the proposed $944,680,555 allocated to our public safety department and increase the proposed $24,760,742 and $26,837,014 budgets for community development and community enrichment.
