There are so many alternatives to the broken system of policing that has endured in our country for years. Alternatives that aim to build up communities rather than coerce. I understand that we need some form of social control, but I urge you to consider and invest in alternatives, such as restorative justice. Additionally, I would love to see more money invested in mental health and trauma services, education, and after-school care, adequate housing, healthcare, and employment opportunities.

I support the Phx Police funding. If anything we need more police for a city this large. Otherwise all citizens will have to have a firearm in their home to protect their family. I’m sure that’s not what Phoenix should be known for.

I ask that you reconsider the budget allocated for our public safety, especially the police sector. Our community asks that you redirect funds to programs that heal and educate our community and to increase the proposed budgets for community development and community enrichment. The City of Phoenix desperately needs investments in mental health and trauma services, education and after-school care, adequate housing, healthcare, and employment opportunities.

I oppose the 44 Adoption of the Tentative 2020-21 Annual Budget (Ordinance S-46650). I urge that you redirect the proposed $944,680,555 allotted to our public safety department to programs that will actually heal and educate our community. Increase the proposed $24,760,742 and $26,837,014 budgets for community development and community enrichment, including in mental health and trauma services, education, after-school care, adequate housing, healthcare, and employment opportunities

Do not Defund the Police Department. Mayor Gallegos and others who support the anti-police agenda may as well spit in Chief Jeri Williams' face after the amazing peace & lawfulness that was accomplished in this city. Mayor Gallegos and council members who continue to support an anti-law enforcement agenda, do the right thing for the entire city of Phoenix. Mayor Gallegos, don't be a coward, stand up for what is right for this city. Your actions will be remembered in November.

I oppose the budget proposed in this ordinance. The City of Phoenix needs and deserves policing alternatives and investments in mental health and trauma services, education and after-school care, housing, healthcare and employment opportunities. The Phoenix Police Department is statistically ranked one of the highest in the country for cases of police killing civilians. Please allocate and redirect 2020-21 city funds to policies and programs that will create and sustain a safe community.

Please allocate $4 million to fund the Office of Accountability and Transparency and the Civilian Review Board. George Floyd's murder and Dion Johnson's death show that we must have more oversight and review of the police, including the Phoenix police. This money can easily be taken from the the proposed $944,680,555 allotted to our public safety department to programs.

I would like to urge the council to consider how better $944k could be spent during a time of unrest and major social change.
Education. Community Outreach Programs. Mental Health Initiatives. Public transportation.
The police department needs to be defunded until/unless de-escalation training and community wellness training are afforded just as many, if not more hours of training than firearms.

Hello, my name is Erin Chelgren. As a lifelong AZ resident, I am writing to comment on CC Item No. 44 of the June 3rd, 2020 hearing. Please reconsider the $944,680,555 allocated to our public safety department for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. Funds are not appropriately going where needed! Our community asks that you redirect funds to programs that heal and educate the community. Increase the proposed $24,760,742 and $26,837,014 budgets for community development and community enrichment.

Many in our community are rightfully angry, the city of Phoenix must allocate $3 million to fund the Phoenix Civilian Review Board. Our communities must have justice for excessive use of force by Phoenix PD. There must be transparency within and amongst those that willingly take an Oath to Serve and Protect the People of this vibrant city. Peace IS possible. Stop militarizing the police.

Please reconsider this budget proposal. Phoenix PD has one of the highest rates of police killing civilians. As such, we need a policing alternative. It would be best to redirect funds going to the public safety program towards community development and enrichment in order to better provide mental health and trauma services, education and after school care, adequate housing, healthcare and employment opportunities.

Our Phoenix communities need the brave men and women of the PD to be properly funded, trained, and supplied. Without law and order, there is chaos.

Phoenix Police Officers need our support. By cutting funding to the people who protect us you are only putting the community at more risk. Funding is necessary for adequate training, staffing and equipment.

When city leaders scratch their heads and wonder why big companies don’t relocate to Phoenix to have headquarters here, why top job candidates do not want to relocate from coastal cities, they need only look at this budget to see why. The return on investment in such a high level of policing is bad business. It is expensive and still does not create peace. Investing in community organizations delivers an outsized ROI in terms of peace in our neighborhoods. Please invest in peace, not policing.

Please cut the proposed $944,680,555 allocated to our public safety department for the 2020-21 fiscal year. The Phoenix Police Department is statistically ranked one of the highest in the country for cases of police killing civilians and should not continue to receive funding Our community asks that you redirect funds to programs that heal and educate our community, especially during a pandemic/ Increase the proposed $24,760,742 and $26,837,014 budgets for community development and enrichment.

Our Community asks that you redirect funds from Phoenix Police to programs that heal and educate our community. The City of Phoenix is statistically ranked highest in the country for cases of police killing civilians. Police forces across the country have proven that diversifying and implementing various trainings have not and will not end police brutality. The City of Phoenix needs and deserves policing alternatives and investments in housing, education, environmental, and other programs.

Please reconsider the Phoenix PD budget for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. The funds should be allocated to programs that support public schools, community development, community enrichment, and to community organizations that support youth & family development.

I fully support our Law Enforcement! Please pass Budget item 44. These hard working, selfless, brave employees show up daily to do what half this world would not, could not do. They hear things, see things none of us can phathom. They deserve as much funding as possible to get their job done safely, fairly. Just like the Doctors & nurses handling Covid w/out proper gear, things spiraled downward. Same goes for the PD--give them EVERYTHING they need-mental,physical,financial. Back our lifesavers!
