I oppose this budget because the budget does not fully fund civilian oversight.

I oppose the tremendous amount of funding being allocated to the Phoenix Police Department. The PPD is one of the most violent in the country, while our education lags behind other states. We must defund and demilitarize the police department, focusing the funds on community development and education among other things.

Research has shown that investment in police doesnt have proportional decreases in community violence. We need to take the preventative approach and invest in programs that build our communities.

As a Phoenix resident, I ask that the City of Phoenix to Defund the Phoenix PD and allocate 2020-21 city funds to policies and programs that will create and sustain our community. Phoenix needs policing alternatives and investments in mental health and trauma services, education, and after-school care, adequate housing, healthcare, and employment opportunities. The Phoenix Police Department is statistically ranked one of the highest in the country for cases of police killing civilians.

Hello, my name is Brandon McMahon and I am writing to comment on CC Item No. 44 of the June 3rd, 2020 hearing. I am strongly asking the council to reconsider the $944,680,555 allocated to our public safety department for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. Funds are not appropriately going where needed! Our community asks that you redirect funds to programs that heal and educate the community. Increase the proposed $24,760,742 and $26,837,014 budgets for community development and community enrichment.

I do not approve of $944 million of our tax dollars going to an ineffective and violent police unit. With their existing budget they have failed to be accountable and practice deescalation. Please redirect funds to those who build the community up and can address problems at their root. Social workers, schools, community programs, and housing need expanded funding to improve the city.

Increase the proposed $24,760,742 and $26,837,014 budgets for community development and community enrichment. The Phoenix Police Department is statistically ranked one of the highest in the country for cases of police killing civilians and should not continue to receive funding.

I ask that you pass this budget. The Phoenix Police Department serves one of the largest cities in the United States, and yet it is consistently understaffed. PPD has done a tremendous job keeping us safe, while allowing peaceful protesters to be heard during these difficult times. Please remember, COVID-19 is still a reality, and our economy will likely take years to recover. Defunding a foundational social institution at a time like this would only lead to further destabilization.

Our Phoenix communities deserve safety, healing, food, housing, mental health resources, education, and youth programs. NOT MORE POLICE. Phoenix Police does NOT need this money. It is time you invest in our communities and the programs and resources needed to help us thrive. Police do not make us safer. As you have seen, they make our communities more dangerous. They incite violence, they kill, and they do with impunity. I want these funds diverted from police to the people. Make the right choice

I strongly oppose the budget proposed in this ordinance. Placing $944,680,555 towards public safety as our community desperately needs healing, unity, and enrichment is saddening and counterproductive. Please increase the proposed $24,760,742 and $26, 837,014 budgets for community development and enrichment. We need to find alternatives to address police brutalities and injustices and bring people to a greater understanding while supporting our diverse and beautiful community.

Please allocate 3 million for the a civilian oversight board for the police department. The board should promote transparency and accountability, which is in everyone’s interest.

A strong and healthy Phoenix requires appropriate funding and support of our offices of public safety and our police officers and firefighters. Our officers keep our public safe and enforce the laws of the state of Arizona. They work tirelessly to do their jobs, even amidst a lack of support from many of the elected officials in the city they serve. Appropriate funding allows them to maintain their high-quality officers and the tools they need to protect themselves and our citizens. I SUPPORT!
