62 Public Hearing - Amend City Code - Ordinance Adoption - Rezoning Application Z-SP-2-19-7 - Southeast Corner of 13th Avenue and Madison Street (Ordinance G-6799)
I support this with all my heart ! This is my neighborhood and I live here year round. We need these shelter beds. Our homeless brothers and sisters require assistance with these first steps as they are helped to live justly and thrive in our community. Our locale will prosper if we can raise the tide and lift all boats.
The people served by the HSC are our neighbors. It breaks my heart to live amongst such privilege while only a few blocks away, our fellow citizens are living in such poverty. Knowing that HSC has the capacity and the ability to provide beds to so many more people who are now living on the streets but instead can only watch as the homeless population continues to grow around them is beyond upsetting. I pray the City Council will find it in their hearts to care about those less fortunate.
I am a Phoenix resident and fully support this initiative to increase the number of shelter beds. This is a step towards the right direction. Individuals without shelter deserve our compassion and support.
I have witnessed the increase in our homeless population over the last year and am writing in support of more shelter beds and resources to assist our fellow citizens in finding shelter. The inhumane treatment of our homeless citizens must stop and criminalizing their existence is not the answer.
I own a business off Grand Ave and I think it is critical to house these people. It’s cruel that Phoenix has such a massive unmet need for shelter beds.
Go spend time there and you will see the humanitarian crisis going on. The overwhelming number of homeless living on the streets there is astounding. Increase the shelter capacity to alleviate this crisis now, while continuing to give other support so as to get many of these homeless people back on their feet. Not all homeless people are permanently homeless - they want to get off the street and need a safe place to sleep. The capacity for more beds is there - the city just needs to approve it.
After seeing the Andre House with my own eyes, I can tell more needs to be done to help those who are struggling right now. I strongly support the addition of more beds and overall better treatment and care to the unsheltered.
Long overdue! I completely support item #62 on you agenda and urge to to vote yes. The compromise offer by the planning commission is short sighted and fails to address the immediate needs of our most vulnerable citizens.
Our ability to support our neighbors and friends who have fallen on hard times will directly result in a stronger recovery when we get out of this pandemic. We must add these beds. Please support this item to help our unhoused neighbors get through this pandemic with dignity.
We desperately need additional shelter beds in our community. The first step in getting people the help they need to get off the streets permanently is providing them a decent place to live.

This simply creates a super shelter (a solution that has been proven both in real life and academia to utterly fail everyone, especially people experiencing homelessness). I can't support short-sighted, outdated solutions that are proven failures. There are much better, actually impactful solutions to this problem; hopefully, we examine those instead. Please reject this expansion and do the hard work of actually solving societal problems with complex solutions.
The local community has been working towards getting our people more shelter beds for years. When will City Council do what is right for the vulnerable unsheltered? I strongly support adding more shelter beds. Being unsheltered is not a crime and especially in the middle of a national pandemic, how can you continue to deny the humanity of the people that are only attempting to survive in D7? #peopleoverproperty
This is definitely just one small step in building a long-term solution for our community, but it is a step that is only being held back by the City. The organizations located here have the resources to increase the amount of beds available and the buildings are rated to hold more than currently permitted by the City. It has been years since talks about this solution began and it’s time that we put it into practice, rather than continuing to debate.
I support adding shelter beds. Our unsheltered friends need our support, COVID has worsened the conditions for many people, but most especially the unhoused. It is imperative that we add more shelter beds.
I support adding shelter beds. This addition utilizes space already available to provide shelter to those being turned away daily for lack of space. As stated by the HSC, "[a]dding more shelter beds is a FIRST STEP and short-term solution." Certainly more work must be done to address the housing crisis in AZ & the long-term needs of the homeless in Phx. But this is a first & necessary step to recognizing the dignity of our homeless neighbors & aiding them in their path out of homelessness.
I support an increase to the number of shelter beds here in Arizona.

This is necessary support for the unsheltered. Resources must be consistently allocated to our vulnerable community members.

I support! People should always come before property. Housing is a basic human right.
