62 Public Hearing - Amend City Code - Ordinance Adoption - Rezoning Application Z-SP-2-19-7 - Southeast Corner of 13th Avenue and Madison Street (Ordinance G-6799)
I strongly support Ordinance 62. Providing resources for unsheltered folks in our community will change lives. It is inhumane to expect these neighbors who are living with disproportionate disadvantages to sleep on designated uncovered pavement anytime, yet alone in the harsh elements of our summer desert climate. The mere proposal of this ordinance proves we can, and should provide these citizens of our state with these basic human needs to help these individuals survive and thrive.
I strongly support this ordinance. Each human in our city, regardless of their housing situation, deserves to be treated with dignity and basic human rights. Housing shouldn't be a question for our homeless neighbors each night and they deserve a safe space to sleep, free of harassment and protected from the elements. This ordinance does not increase the amount of space the Human Services Campus needs, but it allows us to better support our community. Please pass this ordinance to help our city.
I strongly support Ordinance 62. We must treat others with kindness, dignity, and respect. Adding beds will ultimately lead to safer neighborhoods and better outcomes for our unhoused neighbors.
I strongly support ordinance 62. As this pandemic remains out of control in Phoenix causing people to lose their jobs and be evicted from their homes, the unsheltered population continues to grow. Opposing the addition of beds to support these people is cruel and inhumane.
Fully support ordinance 62. AZ has one of the highest eviction rates in the country. This problem is only exacerbated by the pandemic which has impacted thousands of AZ families. It is inhumane and violent to oppose adding beds to support unhoused people.
I fully support adding new shelter beds to the zone. Every single unsheltered person is our neighbor and they deserve to have safe places to sleep and recover.
Sixteen independent nonprofit organizations work collectively to provide wrap-around services to thousands each year whose goal is to move from street to home. Homelessness disproportionately impacts a marginalized or underrepresented segment of the
community; this issue is of broad, community‐wide importance and is likely to have a significant
impact on the people and causes nonprofits serve. Therefore, the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits supports this initiative.
There are blocks and blocks of people camping on the street around my house because there is no room in the shelter. Not allowing more beds doesn't keep people away, it just makes their living situations more precarious and less safe. This seems very obvious and common-sense. Disapproving zoning for more beds will not make the surrounding communities safer but quite the opposite.
As an AZ resident and compassionate human, I strongly support ordinance 62 to create more beds for the unhoused. This pandemic has exacerbated an already urgent crisis. If our resources aren’t going to care for and support one another, what is the point?
Please act on this proposal to add shelter beds to the Human Services Campus! Homelessness is not inevitable, it is a function of the choices we make as a society and as a community. Let us make a choice today to do better. This proposal does not end homelessness but it mitigates the pain for some of those experiencing homelessness and does not add to the physical space already designated for this use. Please approve this proposal.
Our city desperately needs additional shelter beds to assist folks with having a safe, stable place to sleep at night. The number of unhoused folks sleeping on the streets and in places not meant for human habitation is alarmingly high, especially in this area. People are sleeping outside in this area already and Phoenix is extremely dangerous for folks to not have indoor shelter during the summer months.
Humans deserve respect and integrity, especially when they have lost their homes. The rhetoric in opposition to this is alarming. It’s hateful and uncaring. We should add more facilities for those in need!

I'm all for treating my fellow human beings as human beings. There is a clear need for additional beds.
I wholeheartedly support this ordinance which would improve the city for housed and unhoused community members!

I support ordinance 62. Treating people experiencing homelessness like animals does nothing to solve the problem.
